Frequentist, Bayesian Analysis and Complementary Statistical Tools for Geriatric and Rehabilitation Fields: Are Traditional Null-Hypothesis Significance Testing Methods Sufficient?

open access: yesClinical Interventions in Aging
Null hypothesis significant testing (NHST) is the dominant statistical approach in the geriatric and rehabilitation fields. However, NHST is routinely misunderstood or misused. In this case, the findings from clinical trials would be taken as evidence of no effect, when in fact, a clinically relevant question may have a "non-significant" p-value ...

Compensating Faraday depolarization by magnetic helicity in the solar corona

open access: yes, 2017
A turbulent dynamo in spherical geometry with an outer corona is simulated to study the sign of magnetic helicity in the outer parts. In agreement with earlier studies, the sign in the outer corona is found to be opposite to that inside the dynamo.

Permanental fields, loop soups and continuous additive functionals

open access: yes, 2015
A permanental field, $\psi=\{\psi(\nu),\nu\in {\mathcal{V}}\}$, is a particular stochastic process indexed by a space of measures on a set $S$. It is determined by a kernel $u(x,y)$, $x,y\in S$, that need not be symmetric and is allowed to be infinite on

Linear and Parallel Learning of Markov Random Fields [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We introduce a new embarrassingly parallel parameter learning algorithm for Markov random fields with untied parameters which is efficient for a large class of practical models. Our algorithm parallelizes naturally over cliques and, for graphs of bounded

‘They Need to Hear You Say It’: Healthcare Professionals’ Perspectives on Barriers and Enablers to End‐of‐Life Discussions With Adolescents and Young Adults With Cancer

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT End‐of‐life conversations with adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer rarely occur without the guidance of healthcare professionals. As a part of the ‘Difficult Discussions’ study, focused on palliative care and advance care planning discussions with AYAs with cancer, we investigated the factors that healthcare professionals identify ...

A Generalized Relative (α, β)-Entropy: Geometric Properties and Applications to Robust Statistical Inference

open access: yesEntropy, 2018
Entropy and relative entropy measures play a crucial role in mathematical information theory. The relative entropies are also widely used in statistics under the name of divergence measures which link these two fields of science through the minimum ...

Angular Spectra for non-Gaussian Isotropic Fields [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) Anisotropies is a subject of intensive research in several fields of sciences. In this paper we start a systematic development of basic notions and theory in statistics according to the application for CMB.

Feasibility and Preliminary Efficacy of Integrative Neuromuscular Training for Childhood Cancer Survivors: A Pilot Study

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) often exhibit early deficits in muscle and movement competence, which can compromise long‐term health. Integrative neuromuscular training (INT), a multifaceted approach combining fundamental movement activities with strength exercises, may help address these deficits during ...

A lattice study of the pentaquark states

open access: yes, 2005
We present a study of the pentaquark system in quenched lattice QCD using diquark-diquark and kaon-nucleon local and smeared interpolating fields. We examine the volume dependence of the spectral weights of local correlators on lattices of size $16^3 ...
