Artesunate reduces but does not prevent posttreatment transmission of Plasmodium falciparum to Anopheles gambiae.

open access: yes, 2001
Combination therapy that includes artemisinin derivatives cures most falciparum malaria infections. Lowering transmission by reducing gametocyte infectivity would be an additional benefit.

Challenges to Malaria Elimination in Ethiopia by 2030: A Review

open access: yesJournal of Tropical Medicine, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
Malaria disease is a major health issue in Ethiopia, affecting three‐fourths of the country’s land area and more than two‐thirds of the population living below 2000 m altitude. Over 42 Anopheles species have been identified in the country, but Anopheles arabiensis was the only major malaria vector, accounting for the majority of illness and mortality ...

Spectrophotometric Estimation of Sulfadoxine in Pharmaceutical Preparations

open access: yesE-Journal of Chemistry, 2010
Four simple, sensitive, accurate and rapid visible spectrophotometric methods (A, B, C and D) have been developed for the estimation of sulfadoxine in pharmaceutical preparations. They are based on the diazotization of sulfadoxine with sodium nitrite and

Evaluating the Antiplasmodial Activity of Picrasma javanica Stem Bark Extract and Its Synergy With Artesunate in Rodent Malaria Models

open access: yesScientifica, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
Malaria remains a global health challenge, exacerbated by the emergence of drug‐resistant Plasmodium strains. This study evaluates the antimalarial activity of Picrasma javanica stem bark extract and its combination with artesunate (ART) in Plasmodium berghei–infected mice. The extraction yield using hexane at a 1:5 (w/v) ratio was 7.8% w/w.

Intermittent screening and treatment with artemether–lumefantrine versus intermittent preventive treatment with sulfadoxine–pyrimethamine for malaria in pregnancy: a facility-based, open-label, non-inferiority trial in Nigeria

open access: yesMalaria Journal, 2018
The spread of SP resistance may compromise the effectiveness of intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy (MiP) with sulfadoxine–pyrimethamine (IPTp-SP) across Africa.

Supervised versus unsupervised antimalarial treatment with six-dose artemether-lumefantrine: pharmacokinetic and dosage-related findings from a clinical trial in Uganda. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
BACKGROUND: A six-dose antimalarial regimen of artemether-lumefantrine (A/L) may soon become one of the most widely used drug combination in Africa, despite possible constraints with adherence and poor absorption due to inadequate nutrition, and a lack ...
