Biological sulfane sulfur

Analytical Biochemistry, 1991
A voltammetric method for determining cyanide-reactive sulfane sulfur in biological materials is described. Samples are incubated with a sulfurtransferase, a thiolic cofactor, and cyanide. Thiocyanate formed and/or residual cyanide may then be determined electrochemically with either a silver rotating disk electrode or a dropping mercury electrode in ...

Electrophilic sulfhydration of 8-nitro-cGMP involves sulfane sulfur [PDF]

open access: possibleOrg. Biomol. Chem., 2014
The complex chemistry taking place between the messenger 8-nitro-cGMP and the gaseous transmitter H2S is governed by dioxygen and thiols.

Benzothiazole-Derived Sulfones and Sulfoxides as Reactive Templates for Biothiols and Sulfane Sulfurs

Organic Letters, 2022
In this work we studied the reactions of benzothiazole sulfones and sulfoxides toward reactive sulfur species. The reaction of thiols with benzothiazole sulfones produces sulfinic acids (RSO2H), which can further react with sulfane sulfurs to form thiosulfonic acids (RSO2SH). This was used to design fluorescent sensors for hydrogen polysulfides.

Analysis and characterization of sulfane sulfur

Analytical Biochemistry
In the late 1970s, sulfane sulfur was defined as sulfur atoms covalently bound only to sulfur atoms. However, this definition was not generally accepted, as it was slightly vague and difficult to comprehend. Thus, in the early 1990s, it was defined as "bound sulfur," which easily converts to hydrogen sulfide upon reduction with a thiol-reducing agent ...

Cross‐Talks Between Sulfane Sulfur and Thiol at a Zinc(II) Site

Chemistry – A European Journal, 2022
AbstractTransformations of sulfane sulfur compounds (e. g. organic polysulfides (R−Sn−R, n>2) and elemental sulfur (S8)) play pivotal roles in the biochemical landscape of sulfur, and thus supports signaling activities of H2S. Although a number of previous reports illustrate amine mediated reactions of S8 and thiol (RSH) yielding R−Sn−R, this report

Sensitive Method for Reliable Quantification of Sulfane Sulfur in Biological Samples

Analytical Chemistry, 2019
Sulfane sulfur has been recognized as a common cellular component, participating in regulating enzyme activities and signaling pathways. However, the quantification of total sulfane sulfur in biological samples is still a challenge. Here, we developed a method to address the need.

Possible involvement of sulfane sulfur in homocysteine-induced atherosclerosis

Medical Hypotheses, 2001
Homocysteinemia, first identified as a genetic disease in children in the 1960s, is associated with severe widespread atherosclerosis which causes death (in untreated cases) before the age of 10 years. Elevated blood homocysteine is now recognized as a risk factor for heart disease in the general population.

Visualization of Sulfane Sulfur in Plants with a Near-Infrared Fluorescent Probe

ACS Sensors, 2019
Sulfane sulfur species are an important type of reactive sulfur species. These compounds have unique reactivity to attach reversibly to other sulfur atoms and exhibit regulatory effects in diverse biological systems. Recent studies have suggested that sulfane sulfurs are involved in signal transduction processes of hydrogen sulfide (H2S).
