A new sulfated β-galactan from clams with anti-HIV activity
Carbohydrate Research, 1999A new polysaccharide composed of galactan sulfate with a beta-(1-->3)-glycosidic linkage has been isolated from the marine clam species Meretrix petechialis. The polysaccharide was homogeneous in its composition containing D-galactose. The glycosidic linkage was examined by 2D DQF-COSY and 2D NOESY spectroscopy. The coupling constant of anomeric proton

The structure of a galactan sulfate from the red seaweed Bostrychia montagnei
Carbohydrate Research, 2002The sulfated, methylated galactan isolated from the red seaweed Bostrychia montagnei, showed an unusually narrow structural dispersion. This agaran has the defining linear backbone of alternating 3-linked beta-D-galactopyranosyl units and 4-linked alpha-L-galactopyranosyl and 3,6-anhydrogalactopyranosyl residues.

The galactan sulfate from the edible, red alga Porphyra columbina
Carbohydrate Research, 1981Abstract A galactan sulfate has been isolated from the seaweed Porphyra columbina , and its structure established by a combination of methylation, methanolysis, treatment with alkali followed by methylation, and 13 C-n.m.r. spectroscopy. The polysaccharide belongs to the porphyran class, and consists of 3-linked β- d -galactosyl residues and 4 ...

Simple separation of anticoagulant sulfated galactan from marine red algae
Journal of Applied Phycology, 2008In this study, hot water extracts of 22 red algal species were evaluated for their potential anticoagulant activities. The extracts from eight species (Grateloupia elliptica, Sinkoraena lancifolia, Halymenia dilatata, Grateloupia lanceolata, Lomentaria catenata, Martensia denticulata, Schizymenia dubyi, Chondrus crispus) showed potent activated partial

Sulfated galactan is a catalyst of antithrombin-mediated inactivation of α-thrombin
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - General Subjects, 2008Novel compounds presenting anticoagulant activity, such as sulfated polysaccharides, open new perspectives in medicine. Elucidation of the molecular mechanism behind this activity is desirable by itself, as well as because it allows for the design of novel compounds.

A 2-sulfated, 3-linked α-l-galactan is an anticoagulant polysaccharide
Carbohydrate Research, 2002Marine alga is an abundant source of sulfated polysaccharides with potent anticoagulant activity. However, several attempts to identify the specific structural features in these compounds, which confer the biological activity, failed due to their complex, heterogeneous structure.

Sulfated galactans from the red seaweed Nothogenia fastigiata (Nemaliales, Rhodophyta)
Hydrobiologia, 1990Fractionation of the cetrimide salts of the sulfated polysaccharides of Nothogenia fastigiata led to the isolation of a complex galactan sulfate. This product showed compositional and molecular weight heterodispersion together with composition-, temperature-, time-, and conformation-dependent molecular associations.

Preparation of a sulfated linear (1→4)-β-d-galactan with variable degrees of sulfation
Carbohydrate Polymers, 2000A linear 1,4-β-d-galactan has been prepared by partial acid hydrolysis of the major lupin seed polysaccharide on a preparative scale. The galactan has been characterized by acetylation and methylation analysis, by GPC, as well as by its 1H- and 13C-NMR-spectra. Sulfation with increasing amounts of SO3-pyridine yielded a series of galactan sulfates with

Mobility of Sulfate Ester during Structural Determinations of Red Algal Galactans
Botanica Marina, 2002The polysaccharide from Rhodophyllis membranacea (family Cystocloniaceae) was found to be approximately 80% L-carrageenan together with 20 % of a further precursor-like entity. Alkali treatment of the initial polymer gaveonly ι-carrageenan. A standard methylation of this polysaccharide in NaOH/DMSO gave 95 % of the product as permethylated β ...
