The anti-HMPV (human metapneumovirus) activity was determined for sulfated dl-hybrid galactans obtained from the red seaweed Cryptonemia seminervis and their depolymerized products obtained by reductive partial hydrolysis. Structural studies carried out in three homogeneous depolymerized fractions DS-1, DS-2e and DS-3 (Mw of 51.6-63.8 kDa) showed that ...

A desulfation method using chlorotrimethylsilane for treatment of pyridinium salts of sulfated galactans was developed. It proved to be appropriate for desulfation of polysaccharides of both agar and carrageenan families. In order to evaluate its efficiency in presence of the maximum content of 3,6-anhydrogalactose, it was applied to commercial kappa ...

Immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory and anticancer activities of porphyran, a sulfated galactan
Carbohydrate Polymers, 2023Seaweeds are high in bioactive chemicals frequently used to treat human illnesses. Porphyran is a polysaccharide found in the red seaweeds of the genus Porphyra. Porphyran has been discovered to have immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory activity, and anti-cancer effects via boosting immunity and targeting important apoptotic molecules, making them ...

Immunostimulating effects of a sulfated galactan from Codium fragile
Carbohydrate Research, 2010A pyruvylated sulfated galactan from Codium fragile is a highly ramified polysaccharide consisting of 3-linked, 3,6-linked, and non-reducing terminal d-galactose with pyruvate and sulfate groups; the glycan exerts anti-herpes simplex virus type 2 effects in vitro and in vivo.

The discovery of sulfated galactans and sulfated fucans in marine invertebrates with simple and ordered structures opened new perspectives to investigate the biological activity of these molecules and to determine whether different structures confer high affinity for a particular protein. We undertook a conformational analysis of a 2-sulfated, 3-linked

The structure of a galactan sulfate from the red seaweed Bostrychia montagnei
Carbohydrate Research, 2002The sulfated, methylated galactan isolated from the red seaweed Bostrychia montagnei, showed an unusually narrow structural dispersion. This agaran has the defining linear backbone of alternating 3-linked beta-D-galactopyranosyl units and 4-linked alpha-L-galactopyranosyl and 3,6-anhydrogalactopyranosyl residues.
