Effect of Sulfated Galactan from Hypnea japonica on Bone Metabolism in Rat
Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology, 1972Sulfated polysaccharide from Hypnea japonica and 45Ca was administered into growing rat by intubation or intravenous injection. 45Ca uptake and changes in the phospholipid, collagen, and mucopolysaccharide contents of the metaphyseal and diaphyseal bone were determined.

The structure of a sulfated galactan from Porphyra haitanensis and its in vivo antioxidant activity
Carbohydrate Research, 2004The sulfated galactan fraction F1 isolated from the red seaweed, Porphyra haitanensis, showed typical porphyran structure. It has a linear backbone of alternating 3-linked beta-D-galactosyl units and 4-linked alpha-L-galactosyl 6-sulfate and 3,6-anhydro-alpha-L-galactosyl units.

Partial methanolysis of the agar-type sulfated galactan of the red seaweed Laurencia gemmifera
Carbohydrate Research, 1993This report describes the use of paper chromatography (PC), fast-flow liquid chromatography (FFLC) and reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) for analysis of the products of mild methanolysis of the sulfated galactan of the red seaweed Laurenciu gemrnifera.

Mobility of Sulfate Ester during Structural Determinations of Red Algal Galactans
Botanica Marina, 2002The polysaccharide from Rhodophyllis membranacea (family Cystocloniaceae) was found to be approximately 80% L-carrageenan together with 20 % of a further precursor-like entity. Alkali treatment of the initial polymer gaveonly ι-carrageenan. A standard methylation of this polysaccharide in NaOH/DMSO gave 95 % of the product as permethylated β ...

Simple separation of anticoagulant sulfated galactan from marine red algae
Journal of Applied Phycology, 2008In this study, hot water extracts of 22 red algal species were evaluated for their potential anticoagulant activities. The extracts from eight species (Grateloupia elliptica, Sinkoraena lancifolia, Halymenia dilatata, Grateloupia lanceolata, Lomentaria catenata, Martensia denticulata, Schizymenia dubyi, Chondrus crispus) showed potent activated partial

Sulfated galactans from the red seaweed Nothogenia fastigiata (Nemaliales, Rhodophyta)
Hydrobiologia, 1990Fractionation of the cetrimide salts of the sulfated polysaccharides of Nothogenia fastigiata led to the isolation of a complex galactan sulfate. This product showed compositional and molecular weight heterodispersion together with composition-, temperature-, time-, and conformation-dependent molecular associations.

An anticoagulant was isolated from a marine green alga, Codium cylindricum. The anticoagulant was composed mainly of galactose with a small amount of glucose, and was highly sulfated (13.1% as SO3Na). The anticoagulant properties of the purified anticoagulant were compared with that of heparin by assays of activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT ...

LaPSvS1, a (1→3)-β-galactan sulfate and its effect on angiogenesis in vivo and in vitro
Carbohydrate Research, 2002LaPSvS1, a highly sulfated branched (1-->3)-beta-galactan was prepared from the arabino-galactan from Larix decidua Miller by partial hydrolysis and subsequent sulfation with SO(3)-pyridine in DMF. The molecular weight was analyzed by GPC and the sulfate content was determined by ion chromatography.

SummaryWe compared sulfated galactans (SGs) from two species of red algae using specific coagulation assays and experimental models of thrombosis. These polysaccharides have an identical saccharide structure and the same size chain, but with slight differences in their sulfation patterns. As a consequence of these differences, the two SGs differ in their
