Biochemistry of sulfur-containing amino acids.
Annual Review of Biochemistry, 1983The literature on sulfur amino acid metabolism is too vast for a short chapter to cover in great depth. I attempt here a brief overview with references to many specialized review articles. This review emphasizes aspects of sulfur amino acid metabolism elucidated in the last ten years, in particular aspects not generally covered in biochemistry texts, e.

Sulfur-containing amino acids and risk of schizophrenia
Schizophrenia Research, 2023Schizophrenia is a chronic and complex severe psychiatric disorder. Male and female are different in their risks for schizophrenia for the biologic and sociocultural reasons. Homocysteine (Hcy), Cysteine (Cys), and methionine (Met) play important roles in metabolism, and the three amino acids may also be involved in pathogenesis of schizophrenia. This ...

A new sulfur-containing amino acid
Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1961Abstract A new acidic amino acid (C8H15O4NS) containing cysteine residue was isolated from the urine of an atherosclerotic patient. It melted at 213 ° with decomposition. Crystalline form is rhombic plate from 50% alcohol. Ninhydrin color is blue on paper chromatogram. Rf values are 0.58-0.65 in butanol-acetic acid-water and 0.43-0.53 in phenol-water.

Excitatory Amino Acid Receptor Potency and Subclass Specificity of Sulfur‐Containing Amino Acids
Journal of Neurochemistry, 1987Abstract: The sulfur‐containing amino acids, l‐and d‐cysteate, l‐cysteine, l‐and d‐cysteine sulfinate, l‐and d‐cysteine‐S‐sulfate, l‐cystine, l‐and d‐homocysteate, l‐and d‐homocysteine sulfinate, l‐homocysteine, l‐serine‐O‐sulfate, and taurine were tested in two excitatory amino acid receptor functional assays and in receptor binding assays designed ...

Sulfur-Containing Amino Acid Requirements of Growing Dogs
The Journal of Nutrition, 1982Three experiments were undertaken to establish the total sulfur-containing amino acid requirement of growing dogs. In experiment 1, six Labradors failed to grow normally when fed a soy isolate diet of 0.28% methionine with 0.18% cystine but grow well when the food was supplemented to either 0.57% or 0.74% methionine.

Column chromatography of some sulfur-containing amino acids
Journal of Chromatography A, 1965Abstract A method is described for the chromatographic separation in the Automatic Amino Acid Analyzer of the following sulfur-containing amino acids; cysteic acid, cysteinesulfinic acid, taurine, hypotaurine. The chromatographic behavior of S-sulfo-cysteine, S-sulfo-cysteamine, alaninethiosulfonic acid and thiotaurine was also studied, and methods ...

Structure of a new sulfur-containing amino acid
Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1962Abstract For the determination of the structure of a new sulfur-containing amino acid isolated from the urine of hypercholesterolemic patients, the following compounds were synthesized: S -(isopropylcarboxymethyl)cysteine ( I ), S -(1,1-dimethyl-2-carboxyethyl)-cysteine ( II ), S -(1,2-dimethyl-2-carboxyethyl)cysteine ( III ), S -(2-ethyl-2 ...

Various cancer cells overexpress L-type amino acid transporter 1 (LAT1) to take up a large number of neutral amino acids such as phenylalanine and methionine, and LAT1 transporter should be a promising target for cancer diagnosis and therapy. However, only a few studies reported drug delivery systems targeting LAT1 probably due to limited knowledge ...
