Requirement for sulfur-containing amino acids in infancy.

open access: yesThe Journal of Nutrition, 1986
A series of studies designed to define the requirement of normal infants for sulfur-containing amino acids (methionine, cystine) was conducted with formulas providing 3.0, 2.8, 2.6, 2.2 or 1.8 g of isolated soy protein per 100 kcal. The formulas were fed with or without a methionine supplement.

Therapeutic paracetamol treatment in older persons induces dietary and metabolic modifications related to sulfur amino acids [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Sulfur amino acids are determinant for the detoxification of paracetamol (N-acetyl-p-aminophenol) through sulfate and glutathione conjugations. Long-term paracetamol treatment is common in the elderly, despite a potential cysteine/glutathione deficiency.

Are we getting enough sulfur in our diet?

open access: yesNutrition & Metabolism, 2007
Sulfur, after calcium and phosphorus, is the most abundant mineral element found in our body. It is available to us in our diets, derived almost exclusively from proteins, and yet only 2 of the 20 amino acids normally present in proteins contains sulfur.

Novel sulfur and selenium containing bis-α-amino acids from 4-hydroxyproline [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The synthesis of new substituted prolines carrying at C-4 a second α-amino acid residue is reported. The amino acid, l-cysteine or l-selenocysteine, is linked to the proline ring through the sulfur or the selenium atom, respectively.

Effect of pyridoxine treatment of a homocystinuric patient on the urinary excretion of some sulfur-containing amino acids [PDF]

open access: yes, 1974
The effect of pyridoxine treatment of a homocystinuric patient on the urinary excretion of some sulfur-containing amino acids was studied and the following results were obtained.

Review

open access: yes, 2020
The chalcogen elements oxygen, sulfur, and selenium are essential constituents of side chain functions of natural amino acids. Conversely, no structural and biological function has been discovered so far for the heavier and more metallic tellurium ...

Remnants of an ancient metabolism without phosphate [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Phosphate is essential for all living systems, serving as a building block of genetic and metabolic machinery. However, it is unclear how phosphate could have assumed these central roles on primordial Earth, given its poor geochemical accessibility.

Effects of in ovo injection of sulfur‐containing amino acids on heat shock protein 70, corticosterone hormone, antioxidant indices, and lipid profile of newly hatched broiler chicks exposed to heat stress during incubation

open access: yesPoultry Science, 2019
This study hypothesizes that in ovo sulfur amino acids (SAA) injection can alleviate the heat or oxidative stress of hatched chicks. Thus, the study aimed to assess the impact of in ovo injection of SAA with heat stress during the incubation on heat ...
