Electrochemistry and Antioxidant Activities of Substituted Furanyl Nitrone: The Role of the Nitro Group

open access: yesChemElectroChem, EarlyView.
N‐methyl‐nitroaryl‐furanyl‐nitrone (LQB‐569) suffers a 10‐electron reduction, forming a hydrazine group with two terminal hydroxylamine groups. Nitrones’ antioxidant capacity (AO), despite being very low, correlates with their oxidation profiles, and the ones able to oxidize more easily have better results on DPPH• scavenging and ferric‐reducing ...

Habermann and Pommer (1991) Revisited: Decoding the Mechanism of a Sulfide Storing Microbial Fuel Cell Anode

open access: yesChemElectroChem, EarlyView.
This abiotic study elucidates the chemical and electrochemical anode processes within an unconventional, sulfide storing microbial fuel cell, as proposed by Habermann and Pommer in 1991. It analyzes the role of cobalt oxide species in the sulfide storage and oxidation, serving as a foundation of a future utilization of this microbial fuel cell concept.

Microbial Electrosynthesis for Sustainable Polyhydroxybutyrate Production from CO2 Using Bismuth Nanoparticles

open access: yesChemElectroChem, EarlyView.
Electrochemical CO2 reduction using a Bi‐based electrode generates formate as the sole carbon source for Cupriavidus necator to synthesize polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB). Two configurations are evaluated: the integrated system, performing fermentation in the same reactor post‐electrolysis, while the drop‐in system decouples both steps.

Spectroscopic Interrogation of Thiolate Hydrogen Bonding in the CO Sensor Protein CooA: Implications for Thiolate Ligation Stability and Cytochrome P450 Function

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
Heme proteins are important biomolecules. Proximal cysteine thiolate ligation is found both in heme enzymes such as cytochromes P450 (CYP) and regulatory proteins such as CooA, a CO sensor. The role of H‐bonding to this cysteine is explored in CooA, including variants, and CYP119 using optical and paramagnetic resonance spectroscopies, which highlight ...

Two Key Ferredoxins for Nitrogen Fixation Have Different Specificities and Biophysical Properties

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
Two ferredoxins, FdC and FdN, are collectively essential for the process of nitrogen fixation by the iron nitrogenase in R. capsulatus. We explore the biophysical factors, through spectroscopic and structural characterizations, which determine ferredoxin functionality and pathway specificity. The structure of FdC (PDB: 9I2A) and model of FdN (AF‐D5ARY6)
