Historicising sulfur mining, lime extraction and geotourism in Indonesia and Australia
The Extractive Industries and Society, 2021Abstract In both Australia and Indonesia, artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) have thus far been neglected by historians of colonialism and scholars of geotourism alike. Our two case studies historicise the practices of mining, quarrying and tourism at volcanic sulfur mines in Indonesia and along limestone coasts in southeastern Australia.

Amelioration and Reforestation of Sulfurous Mine Soils in Lusatia (Eastern Germany)
Water, Air, and Soil Pollution, 1996In Germany nearly 1.550 km2 have been claimed by brown coal mining until now. Mine soils formed of carboniferous and sulfurous overburden are classified as “sulfurous mine soils”. They remain vegetation-free for decades and may be cultivated only after soil amelioration. The objective of amelioration is a sustained improvement of soil reaction.

Opencast mining causes significant environmental concern due to acid mine drainage (AMD) caused by the oxidation of pyrites and other sulfur-bearing minerals. The present study intends to determine the seasonal variability of AMD in the affected area of the Ledo opencast mining, the cytotoxicity of the AMD, and the AMD remediation process.

Microbial oxidation of ferrous iron in acid mine water at sulfur and iron-sulfide mine
Soil Science and Plant Nutrition, 1977Abstract The microbial oxidation of ferrous iron in the acid mine water from the abandoned Matsuo sulfur and iron-sulfide mine area was investigated. The acid mine water had an extremely low pH value and contained a high concentration of ferrous iron (about 1,000 ppm). The ferrous iron was oxidized rapidly to the ferric form in the acid mine water. The

Impact of microbial diversity and sulfur chemistry on safeguarding sulfudic mine waste
Minerals Engineering, 1996Abstract A study on the microbial diversity in two uranium mine waste heaps revealed that many different physiological groups of microorganisms occurred. The acidophilic thiobacilli Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and Thiobacillus thiooxidans were the dominant microorganisms in a uranium mine waste heap with a mean pH-value of 4.

Geology and Frasch-mining Operations of the Culberson Sulfur Mine, Culberson County, West Texas
1990Abstract The Pennzoil Sulphur Company's Culberson mine near Orla, Texas, remains the free world's largest producer of native sulfur by the Frasch method. Mining operations commenced on September 30, 1969, under the Duval Corporation, Pennzoil's mining subsidiary at that time.
