The Sun as a driver of the inner heliosphere: Modern investigations of fundamental plasma processes [PDF]

open access: yesNature Communications
The inner heliosphere serves as a natural laboratory to study fundamental plasma physics. A robust understanding of kinetic processes will fill gaps in our global understanding of the Sun and heliosphere, with applicability to laboratory and ...

Detection of solar QBO-like signals in earth’s magnetic field from multi-GOES mission data [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2023
Through variations in its magnetic activity at different timescales, the Sun strongly influences the space weather conditions throughout the heliosphere. The most known solar activity variation is the Schwabe Cycle, also known as the Sunspot Cycle (SCs),

The Sun and heliosphere explorer – the Interhelioprobe mission

open access: yesGeomagnetism and Aeronomy, 2016
The Interhelioprobe mission aims to investigate the inner heliosphere and the Sun from close distances (up to 0.3 AU) and from out of the ecliptic plane (up to 30°). In this paper we present the relevance of the mission and its main scientific objectives, describe the scientific payload, ballistic scenario and orbits of the spacecraft. Possibilities of

SQUARE2: Spacecraft in QUAdrature for Solar Exploration—A Mission Concept for Synergetic Observations of the Sun and Heliosphere

open access: yesFrontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences, 2022
SQUARE2 is the acronym for Spacecraft in QUAdrature for solaR Exploration, and is a mission concept for multi-instrumental two-point observations of the Sun and its environment. It stems from the need to have two probes that are systematically in orbital

Increased and varied radiation during the Sun’s encounters with cold clouds in the last 10 million years [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports
Recent research raises the possibility that 2–3 and 6–7 million years ago, the Sun encountered massive clouds that shrank the heliosphere —the solar cocoon protecting our solar system— exposing Earth to its interstellar environment, in agreement with ...

Sun–Heliosphere Observation-based Ionization Rates Model [PDF]

open access: yesAstrophysical Journal, 2020
Abstract The solar wind (SW) and the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation modulate fluxes of interstellar and heliospheric particles inside the heliosphere both in time and in space. Understanding this modulation is necessary to correctly interpret measurements of particles of interstellar origin inside the heliosphere.

Solar Energetic Particle Prediction in the Inner Heliosphere Using Deep Learning and PSP/IS⊙IS Data

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Machine Learning and Computation
Solar events, such as coronal mass ejections and solar flares, accelerate large numbers of energetic charged particles, producing solar energetic particle (SEP) events that can harm astronauts, damage satellites, and potentially damage infrastructure on ...

Interstellar Neutral Hydrogen in the Heliosphere: New Horizons Observations in the Context of Models

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters
Interstellar neutral (ISN) hydrogen is the most abundant species in the outer heliosheath and the very local interstellar medium (VLISM). Charge-exchange collisions in the outer heliosheath result in filtration, reducing the ISN hydrogen density inside ...

SPICE connection mosaics to link the Sun’s surface and the heliosphere

open access: yesAstronomy and Astrophysics
Aims. We present an analysis of the first connection mosaic made by the SPICE instrument on board the ESA/NASA Solar Orbiter mission on March 2, 2022. The data will be used to map coronal composition that will be compared with in-situ measurements taken by SWA/HIS to establish the coronal origin of the solar wind plasma observed at Solar Orbiter.
