Hyperreflective Foci in the Inner Nuclear Layer: Proof‐of‐Concept for an Optical Coherence Tomography Derived Microglia‐Related Marker in Multiple Sclerosis

open access: yesAnnals of Neurology, Volume 99, Issue 6, Page 1480-1485, June 2026.
The role of microglia has emerged as a critical driver of disease progression in multiple sclerosis (MS), but we lack broadly applicable monitoring tools. Here, we investigated whether hyperreflective foci (HRF), as detected by optical coherence tomography (OCT) within the inner nuclear layer (INL) of the retina, can be used as a marker for microglial ...

Phylogeny of the Electric Rays of the Family Narcinidae (Gill, 1862): Systematic Review and Evidence of the Dispersal Routes to America

open access: yesAquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, Volume 36, Issue 6, June 2026.
ABSTRACT The family Narcinidae has a cosmopolitan distribution; however, its systematic composition and phylogenetic position within Torpediniformes remain poorly understood. This study evaluates the evolutionary and biogeographic history of the family Narcinidae and investigates its distribution patterns using molecular systematics.

Acute Syphilitic Posterior Placoid Chorioretinitis and Syphilitic Optic Neuropathy in a Patient With Human Immunodeficiency Virus Co‐Infection

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, Volume 14, Issue 6, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Syphilis is a re‐emerging global public health concern; recently, its incidence has significantly increased in all demographic groups. However, acute syphilitic posterior placoid chorioretinitis (ASPPC) and syphilitic optic neuropathy in a patient with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) co‐infection are extremely uncommon.

Decoding the Factor H‐Related Proteins: Gatekeepers of Complement Dysregulation in AMD

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Immunology, Volume 56, Issue 6, June 2026.
This review will explore the role of the factor H‐related (FHR) proteins in age‐related macular degeneration (AMD), their accumulation in the outer blood/retinal barrier, and how they may contribute to barrier dysfunction and inflammation. ABSTRACT Age‐related macular degeneration (AMD) is the third most common form of blindness in the Western world ...

Validation of Noninvasive Cutaneous Carotenoid Measurements as Nutritional Biomarker Across Body Composition Groups

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 14, Issue 6, June 2026.
Cutaneous carotenoid measurements obtained non‐invasively by reflection spectroscopy (Veggie Meter and Biozoom) showed strong correlations with plasma carotenoid concentrations measured by HPLC in women across different BMI categories (Veggie Meter rs(151) = 0.697 and Biozoom rs(151) = 0.650, both p < 0.001).
