Coating with overlay metallic-cermet alloy systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 1984
A base layer of an oxide dispersed, metallic alloy (cermet) is arc plasma sprayed onto a substrate, such as a turbine blade, vane, or the like, which is subjected to high temperature use.

Cluster‐Mediated Solute Stabilization and Shear‐Bypass Synergistic Strengthening in High‐Alloyed Systems

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 25, 4 May 2026.
This study demonstrates that in high‐alloy systems, nanoclusters with high solute tolerance can effectively suppress compositional segregation. This mitigation leads to a concurrent 18.7% increase in strength and 41.5% improvement in ductility, which is attributed to a shear‐bypass synergistic strengthening mechanism. The findings provide a new pathway

Deformation‐Induced Formation of Stray Grains in Additive Manufacturing of Single Crystals

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 25, 4 May 2026.
Stray grain formation severely limits the additive manufacturing of single‐crystal alloys. By integrating in situ synchrotron techniques, ex situ characterization, and multi‐scale multi‐physics modeling, the authors reveal that stray grains originate from dislocations at the solid‐liquid interface, rather than thermal supercooling in conventional ...

A History of Superalloy Metallurgy for Superalloy Metallurgists

open access: yesSuperalloys 1984 (Fifth International Symposium), 1984
This “history” is an attempt to tell their story. However, it is not intended to be simply a logical recording Iof the events that have transpired to create them, but is intended to be a technically and scientifically useful analysis through chronological treatment, based upon consideration of the development of their significant property factors, the ...

Substitution of Ti by Nb in Maraging Steel: Effects on Strengthening Mechanisms and Crystallographic Behavior

open access: yessteel research international, Volume 97, Issue 5, Page 2672-2692, May 2026.
This work demonstrates that replacing Ti with Nb in maraging steel forms nanoscale Nb–Mo particles along boundaries, strengthening the alloy without relying on Ti phases. Heat‐treatment tuning promotes uniform crystal orientation and balanced grain boundaries, enabling strong yet ductile behavior.

Effect of molybdenum on isothermal oxidation behavior of 4th generation nickel-based single crystal superalloys

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology
The isothermal oxidation behavior of fourth-generation nickel-based single crystal superalloys with 2-4 wt% Mo content were studied at 900 °C and 1100 °C.At 1100 °C, the oxide layer can be divided into three layers, the outermost layer is Ni–Co oxide ...

A status review of NASA's COSAM (Conservation Of Strategic Aerospace Materials) program [PDF]

open access: yes
The use and supply of strategic elements in nickel base superalloys for gas turbine engines are reviewed. Substitution of strategic elements, advanced processing concepts, and the identification of alternate materials are considered.

Fiber Reinforced Superalloys [PDF]

open access: yes, 1989
Improved performance of heat engines is largely dependent upon maximum cycle temperatures. Tungsten fiber reinforced superalloys (TFRS) are the first of a family of high temperature composites that offer the potential for significantly raising hot component operating temperatures and thus leading to improved heat engine performance.

Effects of Hold Time on the Elevated Temperature Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior of Alloy 247LC‐DS

open access: yesFatigue &Fracture of Engineering Materials &Structures, Volume 49, Issue 5, Page 1794-1808, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Creep–fatigue crack growth (CFCG) experiments were performed at 850°C and 950°C on nominally 12.70‐mm‐thick compact‐type specimens of alloy 247LC‐DS, a Ni‐base superalloy. The loading cycles consisted of trapezoidal waveforms with hold times of 2 and 20 min at the maximum force.

Investigation of Creep Properties of Ti‐43Al‐5V‐4Nb Alloy Considering Oxidation Effects Using Miniature Specimens

open access: yesFatigue &Fracture of Engineering Materials &Structures, Volume 49, Issue 5, Page 1742-1755, May 2026.
ABSTRACT In the present study, creep tests of a TiAl alloy were conducted using miniature specimens (d = 2 mm) under various conditions to investigate their creep properties at 760°C. The test results indicate that creep rupture time obtained using miniature specimens at identical applied stress levels increase with the order of test condition Ar gas ...
