New Transformer for Powering Superconducting Magnets

A new method to increase the efficiency of powering a superconducting magnet is presented. The powering system links a superconducting magnet and the mains. It contains both room and low temperature electrical components.

Superconducting power transformers — A feasibility study

Increased efficiency is the main benefit of superconductivity. Some power is needed to operate the refrigerator but it is extremely small. Reduction in transformer size is also important. Other advantages include an improvement in power factor, extended life, and automatic limiting of short circuits.

The feasibility of superconducting power transformers

Abstract The feasibility of making a 600 MVA 400 kV power transformer with superconductive windings to save I 2 R losses is discussed, and the economic incentive assessed. Despite the radical change in concept, the transformer would be roughly the same size, shape, and weight as a conventional one.

High Temperature Superconducting Partial Core Transformers

The thesis begins by providing an introduction to transformer theory. An ideal transformer is examined first, followed by full core transformer theory. The partial core transformer is then introduced and compared to the full core design. An introduction to superconductors is then presented where a simplified theory of superconductivity is given.
