A Thermodynamic Framework for Turing‐Type Instabilities in Porous Media: Part I Theory
Abstract Pattern formation in geological materials is commonly described using analogies to Turing‐type reaction–diffusion systems, yet a unifying thermodynamic explanation remains elusive. Here we develop a multiscale, thermodynamically consistent framework for pattern‐forming instabilities in porous media undergoing coupled thermo–hydro–mechanical ...

Energy Partition at a Collisionless Supercritical Quasi‐Parallel Shock
Abstract Shocks in collisionless astrophysical plasmas redistribute some of the incident flow energy into both thermal and non‐thermal energy. Quantifying the partition of that energy amongst various particle species or their sub‐populations, and electromagnetic energy, represents a fundamental goal of shock physics.

Modeling the Deformation Response to Mt. Etna Sliding Flank
Abstract The southeastern flank of Mt. Etna volcano slides into the Ionian Sea at rates of centimeters per year. While gravitational spreading and tectonic forces can cause volcanic flank collapse, their effects intrinsically trade off with magmatic forcing. There is still strong uncertainty regarding the processes underlying the sliding.

Topographic Scattering of Internal Waves in the Presence of a Steady Surface Current
Abstract Wave–topography interaction is one of the primary mechanisms through which internal wave energy cascades to small length scales, eventually leading to turbulent diffusion and mixing in the oceans. Precise diffusivity parametrizations are crucial for modeling oceanic flows accurately.

Abstract Lattice Boltzmann (LB) modeling has been extensively applied to porous media processes, including evaporation. Former pore‐scale LB models for evaporation rely on oversimplified assumptions, such as matched viscosities. However, in subsurface CO2 ${\text{CO}}_{2}$–brine systems, the viscosity ratio can exceed 100 under relevant temperature ...

Abstract Vegetation‐induced drag generates nonuniform water surface profiles through flow disruption, creating complex hydrodynamic conditions characterized by enhanced turbulence and energy dissipation. This study investigates the longitudinal velocity and turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) dynamics in emergent canopies under streamwise varying flow ...

Abstract In order to predict future performance of subsurface fluid reservoirs under possible operating scenarios, a dynamic, porous‐medium flow simulation model must be tuned to include representative properties of the reservoir. Estimating subsurface reservoir properties given remotely sensed or borehole‐based observations typically involves finding ...

Schauder estimates for parabolic p$p$‐Laplace systems
Abstract We establish the local Hölder regularity of the spatial gradient of bounded weak solutions u:ET→Rk$u\colon E_T\rightarrow \mathbb {R}^k$ to the nonlinear system of parabolic type ∂tu−div(a(x,t)μ2+|Du|2p−22Du)=0inET,$$\begin{equation*} \partial _tu-\operatorname{div}{\Big(a(x,t){\left(\mu ^2+|Du|^2\right)}^\frac{p-2}{2}Du\Big)}=0 \qquad \mbox ...

2023In this chapter, we highlight the basic concepts behind the use of SFE to select molecules present in food matrices, e.g., carotenoids, essential oils, waxes, and phenolic compounds. Also, we highlight the SFE equipment setup, the methods for process intensification, and mass transfer mechanisms involved in the process, besides the advantages and ...
