Stilbene compounds are specific inhibitors of the superoxide anion generation catalyzed by xanthine oxidase [PDF]
The inhibitory effect of xanthine oxidase (XO) reactions with stilbene compounds, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging by stilbene compounds and superoxide anion (O2-) scavenging activity were examined.

Superoxide Anion, Uncoupling Proteins and Alzheimer’s Disease
Superoxide anion is the first generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) after oxygen enters living cells. It was once considered to be highly deleterious to cell functions and aging. Therefore, antioxidants were suggested to prevent aging and degenerative diseases.

Structural Evidence for a Copper-Bound Carbonate Intermediate in the Peroxidase and Dismutase Activities of Superoxide Dismutase [PDF]
Copper-zinc superoxide dismutase (SOD) is of fundamental importance to our understanding of oxidative damage. Its primary function is catalysing the dismutation of superoxide to O2 and H2O2. SOD also reacts with H2O2, leading to the formation of a strong

Unexpected benzene oxidation in collisions with superoxide anions [PDF]
AbstractSuperoxide anions colliding with benzene molecules at impact energies from 200 to 900 eV are reported for the first time to form massive complexes. With the aid of quantum chemistry calculations, we propose a mechanism in which a sudden double ionization of benzene and the subsequent electrostatic attraction between the dication and the anion ...

Involvement of the superoxide anion in sulphoxidation (Short Communication) [PDF]
Sulphoxidation of compounds capable of undergoing biological sulphoxidation has been demonstrated in a model system (NADH–phenazine methosulphate–O2), known to generate superoxide anions (O2-). Addition of superoxide dismutase to this system results in complete inhibition, suggesting the involvement of O2- in sulphoxidation.
