Superoxide anion production by postsurgical macrophages
Journal of Surgical Research, 1988In order to characterize further the metabolic activity of postsurgical macrophages, we examined their potential to produce superoxide anion (O2-) in response to phorbol myristate acetate. Rabbits underwent resection and reanastomosis of their ileum after which peritoneal exudative cells (PEC) were collected at various times after surgery.

The effects of phenolcarboxylic acids, caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, and ferulic acid on the generation of superoxide anion and the production of lipid peroxide induced by superoxide anion were studied. Only ferulic acid anion among the phenolcarboxylic acids scavenged superoxide.

Superoxide anion and drug-induced hemolysis
1977Superoxide anion, either generated during the autooxidation of dihydroxyfumaria acid or by the interaction of 1,4-naphthoquinone-2-sulfonate and intracellular hemoglobin in red cells pretreated with the intracellular superoxide dismutase inhibitor, diethyldithiocarbamate, produces structural changes in red cells hemoglobin and hypotonic lysis.

Thymoquinone Is a Potent Superoxide Anion Scavenger
Drug and Chemical Toxicology, 2003The antioxidant and pro-oxidant effects of thymoquinone (TQ), a natural main constituent of the volatile oil of Nigella saliva seeds, and a synthetic structurally-related tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), were examined in vitro. Both TQ and TBHQ efficiently inhibited iron-dependent microsomal lipid peroxidation in a concentration-dependent manner with ...

Bioluminescence Detection of Superoxide Anion Using Aequorin
Analytical Chemistry, 2019Although the superoxide anion (O2-·) is generated during normal cellular respiration and has fundamental roles in a wide range of cellular processes, such as cell proliferation, migration, apoptosis, and homeostasis, its dysregulation is associated with a variety of diseases.

Production of superoxide anions in Paracoccus denitrificans
Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1980Like mitochondria, plasma membranes of the free-living bacterium Paracoccus denitrificans are able to produce superoxide ions. The production of superoxide ions was observed during the initial stages of electron transfer from the respiratory substrates to oxygen, even when the bacteria had been grown anaerobically on nitrate as oxidant.

Superoxide anion radical scavenging property of catecholamines
Luminescence, 2013ABSTRACTThe direct effect of the four catecholamines (adrenaline, noradrenaline, dopamine and isoproterenol) on superoxide anion radicals () was investigated. The reaction between 18‐crown‐6‐ether and potassium superoxide in dimethylsulfoxide was used as a source of .

Scavenging of superoxide anion radical by chaparral
Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, 1999Chaparral is considered to act as an antioxidant. However, the inhibitory effects of chaparral on specific radical species are not well understood. Using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy in combination with spin trapping techniques, we have found that chaparral scavenges superoxide anion radical (O2*-) in a dose-dependent manner.

Ceruloplasmin, extracellular-superoxide dismutase, and scavenging of superoxide anion radicals
Journal of Free Radicals in Biology & Medicine, 1986Ceruloplasmin and extracellular-superoxide dismutase are similar in physical properties. Both are found in extracellular fluids and both are scavengers of the superoxide radical. The relationship between the two proteins was further explored in the present investigation.

Platelet Modulation of Neutrophil Superoxide Anion Production
Thrombosis and Haemostasis, 1990SummaryThe effect of platelets on polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) O− 2 production was examined using autologous sheep and human cell systems. Coincubation of sheep platelets with sheep PMNs in the absence of thrombin resulted in a significant inhibition in basal PMN O− 2 production.
