Methylglyoxal as a scavenger for superoxide anion-radical
Doklady Biochemistry and Biophysics, 2016Methylglyoxal at a concentration of 5 mM caused a significant inhibition of superoxide anion radical (O2 (·-)) comparable to the effect of Tirone. In the process of O2 (·-) generation in the system of egg phosphatidylcholine liposome peroxidation induced by the azo-initiator AIBN, a marked inhibition of chemiluminescence in the presence of 100 mM ...

Production of superoxide anions in Paracoccus denitrificans
Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1980Like mitochondria, plasma membranes of the free-living bacterium Paracoccus denitrificans are able to produce superoxide ions. The production of superoxide ions was observed during the initial stages of electron transfer from the respiratory substrates to oxygen, even when the bacteria had been grown anaerobically on nitrate as oxidant.

Superoxide anion production by postsurgical macrophages
Journal of Surgical Research, 1988In order to characterize further the metabolic activity of postsurgical macrophages, we examined their potential to produce superoxide anion (O2-) in response to phorbol myristate acetate. Rabbits underwent resection and reanastomosis of their ileum after which peritoneal exudative cells (PEC) were collected at various times after surgery.

Superoxide dismutase: an updated review on its health benefits and industrial applications
Critical reviews in food science and nutrition, 2021Many short-lived and highly reactive oxygen species, such as superoxide anion (O2 - ) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), are toxic or can create oxidative stress in cells, a response involved in the pathogenesis of numerous diseases depending on their ...

Superoxide Dismutase-Based Third-Generation Biosensor for Superoxide Anion
Analytical Chemistry, 2002A third-generation biosensor for superoxide anion (O2-) was developed by immobilizing superoxide dismutase (SOD) on a self-assembled monolayer of cysteine on gold electrode; i.e., a SOD/cysteine-modified gold electrode (SOD/Cys/Au) was fabricated. A rapid and direct electron transfer of SOD was realized at the gold electrode by using the cysteine ...

New perspectives on the biochemistry of superoxide anion and the efficiency of superoxide dismutases
Biochemical Pharmacology, 1990The earliest hypothesis concerning the existence of superoxide anion (0;) was put forth in 1931 by Haber and Willstatter (11 during water radiolysis. McCord and Fridovich [2] later postulated that it was generated during the activity of milk xanthineoxidase, an enzyme capable of oxidizing various organic structures efficiently.

A Comment on Anion Binding to Superoxide Dismutase
1983As elegantly discussed in the previous chapter the interaction of anions with copper (II) in Superoxide dismutase is rather complex. From X-ray data the copper (II) chromophore is essentially Square pyramidal with the four histidine nitrogens In a puckered arrangement; the solvent exposed apical position is occupied by a semi-coordinated water molecule

The reactivities of anionic nitroalkanes with 2-nitropropane dioxygenase of Hansenula mrakii, glucose oxidase of Aspergillus niger, and mammalian D-amino acid oxidase have been compared kinetically. 2-Nitropropane dioxygenase is 1200 and 4800 times more active with anionic 2-nitropropane than D-amino acid oxidase and glucose oxidase, respectively.
