Surf-riding and Broaching—A Numerical Investigation on the Vulnerability of Ships

2020
International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) recent discussion on the development of second-generation intact stability criterion has emphasized on the instability problems like surf-riding and broaching of ships. Surf-riding and broaching occur when a ship rides in astern seas with the ship velocity close to the wave celerity.

Influence of GM on Surf-Riding and Broaching of the Fishing Vessel

2020
The influence of GM on surf-riding and broaching of the ITTC A2 fishing vessel (Length between perpendiculars: 34.5 m, Breadth: 7.60 m, Draught: 2.65 m) are investigated using a 6-DOF numerical model. The numerical model is validated by comparisons with the model experiment provided in the literature.

Study on ship's stability loss in surf-riding based on CFD

2017 4th International Conference on Information, Cybernetics and Computational Social Systems (ICCSS), 2017
Based on Computational Fluid Dynamics, ship's righting arms of different heeling angles were calculated to study ship's stability loss in following sea. First, based on the wave-generation method of defining inlet boundary conditions, the numerical wave tank was constructed for ship's movement in surf-riding.

Surf-Riding of Ships from the MARIN Series of Fast Displacement Ships

2023
The paper employs the Second Generation Intact Stability Criteria (SGISC) Vulnerability level 2 to investigate the vulnerability of the MARIN series of fast displacement ships to surf-riding. Additionally, the paper examines the influence of different options for ship resistance and wave surge force calculation on the outcome of the vulnerability ...

Experimental Research on the Surf-Riding Region for High Speed Vessels

SNAME 13th International Conference on Fast Sea Transportation, 2015
It is well known that surf-riding phenomenon is the prerequisite of the broaching-to in following and quartering conditions. For the safety assessment of the fast vessel such as surface combatant sand patrol crafts, the estimation of the surf-riding condition is important. Therefore, so far several experimental efforts have been made. However, in these

Numerical Simulation and Experimental Validation on the Surf-Riding and Broaching of a Fishing Vessel

Volume 7: Ocean Engineering, 2016
Model experiments and numerical simulations on the surf-riding and broaching in following seas of a 42.5m long purse seiner are conducted. Firstly, the free running model experiments with various ship speeds and wave heights are performed in the towing tank to reproduce the phenomena of surf-riding and broaching.
