Prediction of the effects of surface-active elements on gas-liquid metal kinetics

Metallurgical and Materials Transactions B - Process Metallurgy and Materials Processing Science, 1982
Equations have been developed for calculating the fraction of free surface, 1-θT, when two or more surface-active elements (S, O,Se,etc.) are present in liquid iron or its alloys. It is shown that equations of the form k =A Vl-θT -B well describe the essentially linear plots which represent the variation of rate constant k with ...

Role of surface-active elements during keyhole-mode laser welding

Journal Physics D: Applied Physics, 2011
During high power density laser welding of mild steel, the keyhole depth, liquid metal flow, weld geometry and weld integrity are affected by base-metal sulfur content and oxygen (O2) present in the atmosphere or shielding gas. The role of these surface-active elements during keyhole-mode laser welding of steels is not well understood.

Effects of Interaction Between Surface Active Elements on the Surface Tension of Iron

Canadian Metallurgical Quarterly, 1982
AbstractSurface tension data at 1650°C have been measured for the Fe + S + O ternary system and the two binary systems, Fe + O and Fe + S using the levitated drop technique. The results indicate that the reductions in surface tension due to oxygen and to sulphur are essentially additive in the ternary system.
