Influence of local surface albedo variability and ice crystal shape on passive remote sensing of thin cirrus [PDF]
Airborne measurements of solar spectral radiance reflected by cirrus are performed with the HALO-Solar Radiation (HALO-SR) instrument onboard the High Altitude and Long Range Research Aircraft (HALO) in November 2010.

UCanWBGT: urban street canyon heat stress calculation for weather and climate models
This work introduces UCanWBGT, a new model to calculate wet‐bulb globe temperature in an urban environment, suitable for use with weather and climate model data. We present the model, then verify its performance against observations made in the streets of Paris during heatwave conditions.

Dependence of surface albedo on snow cover duration and other snow parameters in Estonia
The duration of snow cover, the state of surface, and the albedo in late winter to early spring are studied as climatic factors. A linear dependence of the surface albedo on the duration of snow cover has been found from the data recorded at Tartu ...

Thermal Shadows and Compositional Structure in Comet Nuclei
We use a fully 3-dimensional thermal evolution model to examine the effects of a non-uniform surface albedo on the subsurface thermal structure of comets.

The impact of increasing urban surface albedo on outdoor summer thermal comfort within a university campus [PDF]
The impact of increasing urban surface albedo on outdoor thermal comfort was studied in two phases: Firstly, the thermal conditions of three locations with different ground surface materials were compared.

A pilot variational coupled reanalysis based on the CESAM climate model
Variational data assimilation of in‐situ and satellite ocean data and reanalysis atmospheric data into an intermediate complexity Earth system model is possible by adjusting the surface fluxes and internal model parameters. This pilot application requires nearly complete information on the atmospheric state for synchronization.

Moisture inversions in the central Arctic: Product assessment and long‐wave radiative effect
This study evaluates the integrated water vapour and the vertical distribution of water vapour of state‐of‐the‐art reanalyses, weather forecast models, and ground‐ and space‐based remote‐sensing products in the central Arctic. A particular focus lies on the representation of humidity inversions and the quantification of the long‐wave radiative effect ...

Surface albedo is one of the key parameters of land surface radiation and energy balance. As surface albedoes for visible and near-infrared solar radiation are quite different, solar radiation partitioning is important to parameterize the total surface ...

Atmospheric effect on the ground-based measurements of broadband surface albedo [PDF]
Ground-based pyranometer measurements of the (clear-sky) broadband surface albedo are affected by the atmospheric conditions (mainly by aerosol particles, water vapour and ozone).
