Pluto’s Surface Mapping Using Unsupervised Learning from Near-infrared Observations of LEISA/Ralph

open access: yesThe Planetary Science Journal, 2023
We map the surface of Pluto using an unsupervised machine-learning technique using the near-infrared observations of the LEISA/Ralph instrument on board NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft.

Thermal Stability of Ice at Shackleton Crater: Implications for Water Ice Detection for the Chang’E-7 Mission

open access: yesThe Planetary Science Journal
The candidate landing region for China’s Chang’E-7 (CE-7) lunar exploration mission is near Shackleton crater at the lunar south pole, and the CE-7 mission will perform in situ detection of water ice.

Interfacial Ice Density Fluctuations Inform Surface Ice-Philicity

open access: yesThe Journal of Physical Chemistry B
The propensity of a surface to nucleate ice or bind to ice is governed by its ice-philicity — its relative preference for ice over liquid water. However, the relationship between the features of a surface and its ice-philicity is not well understood, and for surfaces with chemical or topographical heterogeneity, such as proteins, their ice-philicity is

Does sea ice influence Greenland ice sheet surface-melt?

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters, 2009
Recent decreases in Arctic sea ice and increases in Greenland ice sheet surface-melt may have global impacts, but the interactions between these two processes are unknown. Using microwave satellite data, we explore the spatial and temporal covariance of sea ice extent and ice sheet surface-melt around Greenland from 1979 to 2007. Significant covariance

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

The Challenge of Icy Sample Return Begins With Artemis

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Throughout the Solar System, volatiles are found as solid ices. Returning ices to Earth for scientific analysis is critical to understanding the formation of a Solar System that bears life.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Laser-induced Breakdown Spectroscopy of Ice-regolith Mixtures: Implications for Measurements on Planetary Surfaces

open access: yesThe Planetary Science Journal
Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is an analytical technique enabling in situ chemical analysis of planetary surfaces. Its use on the Mars Science Laboratory and Mars 2020 missions has demonstrated the potential for quantifying water in ...

CO diffusion and desorption kinetics in CO$_2$ ices

open access: yes, 2017
Diffusion of species in icy dust grain mantles is a fundamental process that shapes the chemistry of interstellar regions; yet measurements of diffusion in interstellar ice analogs are scarce.

The Penetration of Solar Radiation into Carbon Dioxide Ice [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Icy surfaces behave differently to rocky or regolith‐covered surfaces in response to irradiation. A key factor is the ability of visible light to penetrate partially into the subsurface.
