Surgical Treatment of Spontaneous Pneumothorax: Pleural Abrasion or Pleurectomy?

open access: yes, 2019
Purpose: A primary spontaneous pneumothorax is a condition that occurs predominantly in young and thin male individuals who do not have any history of underlying lung disease. Various techniques such as pleural abrasion and pleurectomy are used to reduce

Surgical Treatment of Periimplantitis With Augmentative Techniques. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
OBJECTIVES To address the focused question: "In patients with osseointegrated implants diagnosed with periimplantitis, what are the clinical and radiographic outcomes of augmentative surgical interventions compared with nonaugmentative surgical ...

Left ventricular surgical remodeling 2.0

open access: yes, 2021
Left ventricular surgical remodeling has been, for a long time, the procedure applied for large dyskinetic, or akinetic, areas as a consequence of a myocardial infarction, mainly located in the left anterior descending area. Many surgical techniques were

Randomised, double-blind comparison of a fixed co-formulation of intra-articular polynucleotides and hyaluronic acid versus hyaluronic acid alone in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis: two-year follow-up

open access: yesBMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, 2021
Background A first-year interim analysis of this two-year study suggested that intra-articular injections of highly purified, natural-origin polynucleotides and hyaluronic acid (HA) as a fixed combination (PNHA) might improve knee function and joint pain

Organoids in pediatric cancer research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Organoid technology has revolutionized cancer research, yet its application in pediatric oncology remains limited. Recent advances have enabled the development of pediatric tumor organoids, offering new insights into disease biology, treatment response, and interactions with the tumor microenvironment.

Metabolic and Microcirculatory Changes in Severe Renal Ischemia–Reperfusion and Ischemic Preconditioning in the Rat: Are They Detectable in the First Hour of Reperfusion?

open access: yesLife
Ischemia–reperfusion (I/R) strongly affects a graft’s function and survival and modulates microcirculatory and hemorheological parameters. However, the boundary between the reversibility and irreversibility of damage is unclear.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

The psychological impact of surgical complications on patients and surgeons [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Adverse events constitute a significant challenge for healthcare organisations not only in terms of their prevention but also in terms of their after-effects on the injured patients and the staff involved.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.
