From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

Market concentration, market dynamism and business survival [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The paper uses a unique dataset comprising the population of new ventures that enter the UK market in 1998. We argue that we would expect the effect of market concentration on firm survival to be different according to whether an industry is static ...

A Novel Entropy‐Transformed Inverse Weibull Distribution: Development, Properties, and Application in Diverse Data Modeling

open access: yesEngineering Reports
Standard distributions must be improved to enhance their capacity for data modeling because they do not inherently suit all sorts of data sets in an acceptable manner.

PARK(ing) time–How park deficiency affects the biological clock in a Drosophila model of Parkinson's disease

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Drosophila park mutants serve as a model for Parkinson's disease. We used this strain to investigate the connection between oxidative stress and the circadian clock mechanism. We showed that increased oxidative stress affects the physiology of pacemaker cells, disrupting their daily structural plasticity. Lack of rhythmic signaling from pacemaker cells

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.

A Matter of Life and Death: Innovation and Firm Survival [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper examines the effects of innovation on the survival of manufacturing firms in the Netherlands. The demographics of firms according to their innovative performance and type of innovation are traced by using the Business Register population of ...

Using weibull mixture distributions to model heterogeneous survival data [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
In this article we use Bayesian methods to fit a Weibull mixture model with an unknown number of components to possibly right censored survival data. This is done using the recently developed, birth-death MCMC algorithm.

Optimal designs for full and partial likelihood information - with application to survival models [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Time-to-event data are often modelled through Cox's proportional hazards model for which inference is based on the partial likelihood function. We derive a general expression for the asymptotic covariance matrix of Cox's partial likelihood estimator for ...

The Exponentiated Power Generalized Weibull: Properties and Applications

open access: yesAnais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências
We propose a new lifetime model called the exponentiated power generalized Weibull (EPGW) distribution, which is obtained from the exponentiated family applied to the power generalized Weibull (PGW) distribution.

Oligodendroglial impact on axonal function and survival – a hypothesis

open access: yesCurrent Opinion in Neurology, 2008
Although multiple sclerosis is considered the prototype of a primary autoimmune disease in the central nervous system, there is emerging evidence that primary oligodendrocyte dysfunctions can suffice to trigger a secondary immune response in the nervous system.
