Fluid Dynamics in Suspension-Feeding Blackfish

Science, 1991
Measurements of flow patterns and water velocities inside the oral cavity of blackfish ( Orthodon microlepidotus ), made with a fiberoptic endoscope and thermistor flow probe, revealed that gill-arch structures act in blackfish as barriers that direct particle-laden water to the mucus-covered roof of the oral cavity,

Flow through the feeding structures of suspension feeding zooplankton: a physical model approach

Journal of Plankton Research, 1992
Simple multi-filament models of suspension feeding zooplankton feeding structures were constructed and the flow through and around the models was described. The fraction of water passing the filter depends on filament diameter, interfilament spacing and the number of filaments.

Suspension feeding in ciliated protozoa: Feeding rates and their ecological significance

Microbial Ecology, 1980
The quantitative uptake of suspended particles has been studied in 14 species of ciliated protozoa in terms of the maximum rate of water cleared at low particle concentrations and of the maximum ingestion rate at high particle concentrations. The results, supported by data from the literature, show that ciliates which feed on larger particles (> 1-5μm)

Aspects of the Feeding Behavior and Trophic Ecology of Suspension-Feeding Rotifers

Hydrobiologia, 1980
While the evidence is not yet adequate to provide a general assessment of rotifer feeding in the dynamics of planktonic communities, there can be no question but that the feeding biology of this group is a rich and exciting field for freshwater ecologists and natural historians.

Endocerids: suspension feeding nautiloids?

Historical Biology, 2018
For a long time all extinct cephalopods of the subclass Nautiloidea were considered as ecological analogues of the Recent Nautilus.

Barnacle suspension-feeding in variable flow

Marine Biology, 1990
Suspension-feeding behavior of the adult barnacleSemibalanus balanoides (L.), collected at Woods Hole, USA, in 1987 and 1988, was studied in variable conditions of unidirectional and oscillating water flow. Barnacles growing on rocks were placed in a laboratory flume and exposed to precise patterns of water flow created with a specially designed ...

Suspension and Filter Feeding in Aquatic Insects

2019
Aquatic insect feeding occurs at the nexus of habitat, food source and size, and behavior and relies largely on the complexities of mouthpart morphology. This intersection has important consequences for tropic interactions, nutrient processing, and ecosystem function. In aquatic habitats, immature insects feed in a variety of ways; however, consumption

The morphology and performance of suspension-feeding appendages

Journal of Theoretical Biology, 1983
Abstract Many aquatic animals feed on small particles that they remove from the surrounding water using suspension-feeding appendages. Calanoid copepods are an ecologically important group of particle-feeding animals whose diverse second maxillae provide an ideal system for investigating how the structure and behavior of suspension-feeding appendages

Loss of carbamazepine suspension through nasogastric feeding tubes

American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy, 1990
The apparent loss of carbamazepine suspension during administration through polyvinyl chloride nasogastric feeding tubes in vitro was studied. Twelve methods of administering carbamazepine suspension (100 mg/5 mL) were tested; the methods differed with respect to nasogastric tube size, presence and type of diluent, and type of flush solution. Undiluted
