Stability and Trophic Structure in Deposit-Feeding and Suspension-Feeding Communities
The American Naturalist, 1972Suspension-feeding benthic marine organisms feed by straining particles from the overlying water. Deposit feeders feed by ingesting bottom sediments. These two alternative strategies bring about many differences in food predictability, interspecies interactions, and population dynamics. Because suspension feeders rely principally upon phytoplankton for

Feeding and cleaning mechanisms in the suspension feeding bivalve Mytilus edulis
Marine Biology, 1981Feeding and pseudofeces formation were studied in intact Mytilus edulis clearing suspensions of graphite particles, and the processes were compared with activities observed in mussels with a severed adductor muscle. Most particulate material in the stomach was present in the suspended state.

Switching Between Deposit and Suspension Feeding in Coastal Zoobenthos
2001This chapter, consisting of an overview followed by two sub chapters each dealing with a specific example, attempts to provide current insight into possible switching between deposit and suspension feeding in coastal zoobenthos. The examples are two common inhabitants of shallow waters, the polychaete Nereis diversicolor and the bivalve Macoma balthica.

Abstract In this paper we analyse methods that have been used to quantify the different physiological processes involved in food acquisition and absorption by suspension-feeding bivalves. In particular, we have considered those methods that have been used for determining food processing rates under ambient conditions of food availability.

Suspension Feeding in, Ciliated Protozoa: Structure and Function of Feeding Organelles
Archiv für Protistenkunde, 1980Summary The function of mouth organelles in suspension feeding ciliates has been investigated.Ciliary membranelles propel water in a direction parallel and posterior to the individual membranelles (perpendicular to the membranellar band). In most oligohymenophores (hymenostomes and peritrichs) the feeding currents are forced through the ciliary ...

Modelling of ciliary downstream collecting in suspension-feeding invertebrates
Mathematical Methods in the Applied Sciences, 2001AbstractThe motion of fluid and suspended particles in ciliary downstream collecting suspension feeding is investigated on the basis of both experimental and numerical work. Throughout the paper, the suspension‐feeding polychaete Sabella penicillus is chosen to be the model species. Particle retention rate measurements indicate that S.
