Increasing the Incentive to Serve: The Effects of a Juror Pay Increase in Texas

open access: yesBehavioral Sciences &the Law, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Although low juror pay is commonly offered as a reason why jurors do not show up to jury service, there is remarkably little empirical information on how juror pay affects summons response. This study examines four large‐sized counties in Texas before and after pay increased from as little as $6 a day to $40, analyzing patterns of the percent ...

Bubble‐Mediated Intensification of Biomass‐Based Oil Conversion: Bubble Dynamics, Control Strategies and Equipment

open access: yesCarbon and Hydrogen, EarlyView.
Focus on the bubble interface transfer behavior during the conversion process of biomass‐based oil, and mainly review the bubble dynamic characteristics in the gas‐solid/gas‐liquid reaction processes under extreme conditions during the conversion process.

Upward Flow of Large Size Particles-Water Mixtures Through Swaying Pipes

open access: yes, 2004
Calculation of the hydraulic gradient due to the upward flow of a large size particles-water mixture in a swaying vertical pipe is a central problem in the design of systems for deep-sea mining of manganese modules.

Acoustic‐driven surface cleaning with millimeter‐sized bubbles at translational resonance

open access: yesDroplet, EarlyView.
Time‐lapse visualization comparing bubble trajectories. The top panel (0 Hz) shows a bubble's linear path under no acoustic forcing, while the bottom panel (50 Hz) demonstrates the oscillatory motion induced by acoustic waves at a resonance mode. This mechanism holds promising potential for applications such as surface cleaning.

Effects of Using a 360-Degree Swaying Chair on Physical Workload During VDT Work

open access: yesSafety
Prolonged visual display terminal (VDT) work leads to static muscular loading, increasing the risk of musculoskeletal disorders. Active chairs have been proposed to alleviate such issues; however, solutions like balance balls often induce discomfort due ...

What Role Do Finance Ministers Play in Political Business Cycles? Evidence‐Based on a New African Dataset

open access: yesInternational Journal of Finance &Economics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study investigates how the personal characteristics of finance ministers influence political budget cycles in Africa. Using a new dataset covering 300 finance ministers across 23 countries from 1980 to 2020, we find that political budget cycles primarily take the form of increased government consumption during election years.

Computational Model and Numerical Simulation for Submerged Mooring Monitoring Platform’s Dynamical Response

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences, 2015
Computational model and numerical simulation for submerged mooring monitoring platform were formulated aimed at the dynamical response by the action of flow force, which based on Hopkinson impact load theory, taken into account the catenoid effect of ...

Analogy Study of Center-Of-Pressure and Acceleration Measurement for Evaluating Human Body Balance via Segmentalized Principal Component Analysis

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2019
The purpose of this research is to investigate the feasibility of evaluating the human’s balancing ability by means of the human body’s swaying acceleration measurements instead of the traditional center-of-pressure (COP) measurement. The COP
