Damage along swift heavy ion trajectory

Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research B, 2019
Abstract A swift heavy ion leaves a damaged trail (SHI track) while penetrating through a solid. The radius of the track depends on the ion energy loss and velocity, and thereby on its penetration depth. Applying developed Monte Carlo code TREKIS and molecular dynamics approach we describe the damage distribution along the trajectory of an SHI (Xe ...

Swift heavy ion induced modifications in polypropylene

Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research B, 2004
Abstract The samples of polypropylene were irradiated with 58Ni7+ (86 MeV) ion beam to analyze the swift heavy ion (SHI) induced modifications as a function of ion fluence ranging from 1 × 1011 to 1 × 1013 ions cm−2. Modifications in optical, chemical and structural properties of the polymer were evaluated by UV–VIS, FTIR and XRD techniques.

Folding Graphene with Swift Heavy Ions

MRS Proceedings, 2011
ABSTRACTSwift heavy ion induced modifications on graphene were investigated by means of atomic force microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. For the experiment graphene was exfoliated onto different substrates (SrTiO3 (100), TiO2(100), Al2O3(1102) and 90 nm SiO2/Si) by the standard technique.

Swift heavy ions for magnetic nanostructures

Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section B: Beam Interactions with Materials and Atoms, 1998
Abstract A comprehensive review on the use of swift heavy ion irradiation of intermetallic rare earth-transition metal compounds is given. We show that latent track precipitation is possible in some of these metallic compounds, with diameters in the range 1–5 nm. The behaviour is well described by the thermal spike model.

Unzipping and folding of graphene by swift heavy ions

Applied Physics Letters, 2011
We show that graphene on a dielectric substrate sustains major modifications if irradiated with swift heavy ions under oblique angles. Due to a combination of defect creation in the graphene layer and hillock creation in the substrate, graphene is split and folded along the ion track yielding double layer nanoribbons. The folded parts are up to several

Swift heavy ion irradiation of polystyrene

Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section B: Beam Interactions with Materials and Atoms, 1996
Abstract We have studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy the chemical modifications induced by swift heavy ions in polystyrene. The overall destruction yield becomes very significant at high electronic stopping power ( d E d x ) e and the radiation sensitivity of this aromatic polymer merges typical values of equivalent ...

Response of ZrC to swift heavy ion irradiation

Journal of Applied Physics, 2023
Zirconium carbide (ZrC) is commonly used for energy sector research, as well as a surrogate for the proposed advanced nuclear fuel candidate uranium carbide. This study investigates structural modifications to nanocrystalline and microcrystalline ZrC resulting from dense electronic excitations induced by swift heavy ion exposure.

Swift heavy ion modification of polymers

Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section B: Beam Interactions with Materials and Atoms, 1995
Abstract We have studied the effects of dense electronic excitations on vinyl linear polymers, by performing swift heavy ion, SHI, irradiations. We used different ion beams, from C to Pb, provided by the GANIL accelerator at energies of a few MeV/u.

Interface modification by swift heavy ions

Radiation Measurements, 2003
The modification of thin layer interfaces by ion irradiation (ion beam mixing) is the most elegant way to learn about the atomic transport processes induced by the energy deposited along the ions path. Ion beam mixing in the nuclear stopping regime has been intensively studied for about 30 years, while ion beam mixing by electronic energy deposition ...
