Nanostructuring in semiconductors by swift heavy ions
2007 International Workshop on Physics of Semiconductor Devices, 2007There have been enormous worldwide research efforts in semiconductor nanostructures in the last decade. The basic motivation behind the study of semiconductor nanostructures is that the quantum-confinement effect in such low dimensional systems allows devices with promising properties to be engineered.

Materials Engineering with Swift Heavy Ions
2011High energy heavy ions are proving to be important tools in the efforts to modify the properties of materials in a controlled fashion to provide possibility of making them functional for specific applications in planned developments towards futuristic technologies. Presently, research in this field is mostly of exploratory kind.

Electronic Sputtering with Swift Heavy Ions
2007Swift heavy ions of energies where electronic processes dominate the slowing down process in matter induce sputtering mainly by inelastic effects, and not by elastic collision cascades. Given by the high energy input per incident ion, the measurements of sputtering yields include specific problems and require different techniques than for nuclear ...

Modification of ceramic coatings by swift heavy ions
Surface and Coatings Technology, 2005Abstract Throughout the last decade, swift heavy ions (SHI) of some MeV/amu kinetic energy have revealed to be an excellent tool for the “nano-modification” of materials. Besides the already existing ion-track technology, which makes use of the structural and property alterations of the material inside the tracks of spatially isolated single-ion ...

Radiation damage in UO2 by swift heavy ions
Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section B: Beam Interactions with Materials and Atoms, 1997Abstract Specimens of sintered UO2, a high melting point ceramic with the fluorite structure, were irradiated with heavy ions (129Xe, 238U) with different fluences (5 × 1010 to 7 × 1013 ions/cm2) and energies (173 MeV for Xe ions to 2.713 GeV for U ions). The influence of the electronic energy loss on the mechanisms of damage formation was studied in

Swift Heavy Ion Irradiation on Quasicrystals
MRS Proceedings, 2003ABSTRACTThe present level of understanding of the effects of irradiation of quasicrystalline targets with swift heavy ions has been reviewed here. The results of systematic deposition of large amount of energy densities (12 keV/nm < (dE/dx)e < 40 keV/nm) in Al-Cu-Fe based system are discussed in terms of resistivity measurements (in-situ ...

Swift heavy ion induced plastic deformation
Radiation Effects and Defects in Solids, 1993Abstract Electronic energy loss, which dominates the slowing down of swift heavy ions in solids, leads to atomic rearrangements depending on the nature of the irradiated target. Amorphous materials are subject to structural changes similar to those observed in crystalline materials and undergo anisotropic plastic deformation.

Swift heavy ion irradiation of SrTiO
2008The irradiation of SrTiO3 single crystals with swift heavy ions leads to modifications of the surface. The details of the morphology of these modifications depend strongly on the angle of incidence and can be characterized by atomic force microscopy. At glancing angles, discontinuous chains of nanosized hillocks appear on the surface.

Swift heavy ion irradiation of diamond powder
Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section B: Beam Interactions with Materials and Atoms, 2012Abstract Sub-micrometer sized diamond powder was irradiated with 1.4 GeV uranium ions at fluences of 5 × 1012, 1 × 1013 and 8 × 1013 ions/cm2. The resulting structure of the irradiated diamond powder was investigated by synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman scattering and transmission electron microscopy.

Modifications of polycarbonate induced by swift heavy ions
Materials Science and Engineering: A, 2007Abstract The effects of 80 MeV O6+ ions irradiation on polycarbonate (makrofol-DE) have been studied by different characterization techniques, viz. Fourier transform IR spectroscopy, Vickers’ microhardness tester, LCR meter, thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry.
