Improving Switches and Crossings Performance and Reliability

International Journal of Railway Technology, 2016
Network Rail, the infrastructure manager of UK, is currently focussing on improving the reliability and performance of switches and crossings layouts. Site investigations have revealed many poorly performing switches and crossings sites that require intensive maintenance intervention with associated costs and safety implications.

Cross trained workers with switching points, switching cost and optional feedback

2011 3rd International Conference on Electronics Computer Technology, 2011
In this paper a service facility with the front room and the back room has limited number of servers. Two models are analysed. In the first model, given the number of available workers, we determine an optimal policy so that the expected number of customers in queue is minimized subject to a constraint ensuring that there is a sufficient work force to ...

Switches, cross-talk and memory in Escherichia coli adherence

Journal of Medical Microbiology, 2004
Escherichia coli is a successful commensal and pathogen. Its pathogenic diversity stems from the acquisition and expression of multiple virulence-associated loci. Many of the key virulence factors are surface structures involved in adherence and motility.

Field Experimental Studies of Railway Switches and Crossings

Civil-Comp Proceedings, 2012
Switches and crossings are the weakest point in the rail infrastructure, with a high rate of failure in comparison with plain lines arising from the amplified dynamic forces that occur as vehicles ...

Wheel–rail interaction and damage in switches and crossings

Vehicle System Dynamics, 2012
Dynamic interaction between a railway freight vehicle and a switch and crossing (S&C) is studied by simulations of vehicle dynamics. In particular, the influence of a stochastic spread (scatter) in traffic parameters on damage in the S&C is assessed. The considered parameters are wheel profile and wheel-rail friction coefficient. To form a database for

Photonic Switching and Automatic Cross-Connect Systems

Topical Meeting on Photonic Switching, 1987
There will be an explosion of digital facilities as more and more lightwave systems are installed in the next few years. The size and complexity of junction offices where transmission facilities are interconnected will increase, and rearrangements will be more frequent than in the past.

Monolithically integrated WDM cross-connect switch for nanoseconds wavelength, space, and time switching

2015 European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC), 2015
We present a novel photonic integrated 4×4 WDM cross-connect switch exploiting SOA technology for nanoseconds wavelength, space, and time switching operation. Experimental results show a cross-talk <; -30dB, lossless and error-free operation with <;1dB penalty.

Monitoring of Switches and Crossings/Tracks Using Smart Sensors

2021
Monitoring the condition of switch and crossings is a challenge for infrastructure managers (IMs). It requires specially trained switch inspectors to manually check the condition of the track. Hence, a fast and cheap system to continuously monitor the Switches and Crossings is a crucial matter for railway IMs. A methodology for continuous and real-time

Switch and crossing inspections and maintenance management using handheld computers

4th IET International Conference on Railway Condition Monitoring (RCM 2008), 2008
This paper discusses a new tool designed to assist in the performance of switch and crossing inspections. Known as SwitchlnspectTM, this PDA-based program allows the inspection to be conducted in electronic format. With measurements and defects recorded in this manner, the collected information may be used to more efficiently manage maintenance ...

Multicasting optical cross connects employing splitter-and-delivery switch

IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, 1998
A new splitter-and-delivery (SAD) switch having multicasting capability is proposed. It is best implemented in a single silicon board using planar silica waveguide technology. Less than -40-dB crosstalk is achievable by an auxiliary action of the optical gate. Three optical cross-connect architectures employing the SAD switch are proposed.
