Analysis of Switching Overvoltage and Suppression Measures in UHV Transmission Lines

Canadian journal of electrical and computer engineering, 2019
As the ultrahigh-voltage (UHV) projects are rapidly developing, it is necessary to investigate the problems involved in overvoltage and insulation, thereby providing a technical basis for future UHV projects.

Fault Protection Strategy and Switching Overvoltage in a ±500 kV MMC-HVDC Grid

2019 IEEE 8th International Conference on Advanced Power System Automation and Protection (APAP), 2019
The Zhangbei ±500 kV modular multi-level converters (MMC)-based high voltage direct current (HVDC) project to be built in China will use overhead transmission lines with dc circuit breakers (DCCBs).

Average value model of modular multilevel converters for switching overvoltage simulation in VSC‐HVDC grids

IEEJ TRANSACTIONS ON ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING, 2019
The first ±500 kV voltage source converter based high voltage direct current (VSC‐HVDC) grid in the world is being built in China. The half‐bridge submodule‐based modular multilevel converter (MMC), the direct current (DC) circuit breaker (DCCB), and the

A Laboratory Equipment for Investigating Switching Overvoltages

International Journal of Electrical Engineering & Education, 1983
A detailed description is given of a transmission line model and voltage source suitable for demonstrating switching overvoltages associated with overhead line energisation. The model is 3-phase with the supply electronically switched independently in each phase and incorporating switched closing resistors.

Three-phase modeling of 40.5-kV vacuum circuit breaker switching off shunt reactors and overvoltage suppression measure analysis

, 2021
Shunt reactors are commonly used in substations to compensate the capacitive reactive power of electric power systems. When a vacuum circuit breaker (VCB) switches off shunt reactors, an overvoltage with high amplitude and high frequency (HF) is ...

Limitation of transmission line switching overvoltages

2010 IEEE International Conference on Power and Energy, 2010
In this paper switching overvoltages of an actual transmission line are studied. Simulations are executed using Electro Magnetic Transients Program. A comprehensive switching transient study is performed for the Azerbaijan province network in Iran. The purpose of this study is to determine the unnecessary pre-insertion resistors in the UHV network ...

Adaptive Quasi-Three-Level PWM Control Method for Suppressing Overvoltage at Load Coil Terminal of Switching Power Amplifier

IEEE transactions on industrial electronics (1982. Print)
Active magnetic bearing (AMB) is a crucial technology for high-speed rotational machines. The switching power amplifier is the vital actuator that drives the AMB to generate electromagnetic levitation force.

Switching Overvoltages, Substations

2018
This chapter aims to present switching overvoltage insulation coordination methods for substations. As for transmission lines, switching overvoltages only become important for systems whose nominal system voltage is equal to or greater than 345 kV.

A new simulation method of switching overvoltage on shunt capacitors

The 2014 2nd International Conference on Systems and Informatics (ICSAI 2014), 2014
Shunt capacitor banks are widely used in reactive power compensation, but the operating over voltage caused by the frequent operation of shunt capacitors would damage the insulated equipment and affect the reliability of power system. For simulating the switching off over voltage of shunt capacitors by vacuum circuit breakers, the model by adding a ...

Mitigation of switching overvoltages in transmission lines via controlled switching

2008 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting - Conversion and Delivery of Electrical Energy in the 21st Century, 2008
The goal of this work is to present a controlled switching strategy to reduce overvoltages due to transmission line closing and re-closing. Controlled closing and re-closing of transmission lines eliminates the need of pre-insertion resistors, reducing in this way the costs of transmission line circuit breakers.
