Symbiotic Bacteria and Phosphorescence [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1922
IN Prof. Gamble's review of Buchner's “Tier und Pflanze in intrazellularer Symbiose” (NATURE, May 6) reference is made to the work of Pierantoni, according to whom the luminous organs of cephalopods are “essentially cultures of bacteria in media suitable for their nutrition and in situations favourable for obtaining oxygen.”

News from AG Draconis

open access: yesOpen Astronomy, 2012
AG Dra is a classical symbiotic star that undergoes major outbursts at intervals between 12-15 years. We present spectroscopic observations of four emission lines (Hα, Hβ, He II 4686 Å, Raman scattered OVI 6825 Å) before, during and after the major ...

Hemiparasitic Castilleja presence is correlated with increased plant biodiversity across montane plant communities

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
Abstract Premise Root hemiparasites form haustoria in belowground roots of hosts to extract nutrients and water from the surrounding hosts. Through parasitic symbiosis, these plants disproportionately affect plant communities relative to their abundance by reducing host size, altering nutrient flow, and eventually increasing local biodiversity.

An Extremely Massive White Dwarf of the Symbiotic Classical Nova V407 Cyg as Suggested by the RS Oph and U SCO Models

open access: yesOpen Astronomy, 2012
We have analyzed the optical light curve of the symbiotic star V407 Cyg that underwent a classical nova outburst in 2010 March. Being guided by a supersoft X-ray phase observed during days 20-40 after the nova outburst, we are able to reproduce the light
