Symbolic Behavior: Consumption and Socialization
SSRN Electronic Journal, 2001Objects of consumption and their meanings diverge amongst societies according to the social context. Thus, the meanings expressed by consumers reflect their cultural point of view. The consumption behavior can be explained by the need of expressing these meanings, by the ownership of products that communicate to society how the individual is self ...

Matching-to-Sample as a Model of Symbolic Behavior for Bio-behavioral Investigations
Reviews in the Neurosciences, 2008This paper discusses the use of matching-to-sample as a procedure to investigate symbolic behavior acquisition when studying the evolution of language. It is argued that generalized identity and stimulus classes formed after learning arbitrary interconnected conditional stimulus relationships may be the result of basic pre-symbolic processes.

Symbolic or not-so-symbolic wounds: The behavioral ecology of human scarification
Ethology and Sociobiology, 1995Abstract Scarification, the deliberate and often painful modification of the body, is analyzed from the perspective of four competing hypotheses: (1) a rite of passage, (2) a hardening/trauma procedure, (3) a nonadaptive sexually selected character, or (4) an adaptive pathogen-driven sexually selected character. These four hypotheses are tested using

A study on coincidence of symbolic and continuous behavior for symbolic stability analysis
Proceedings Joint 9th IFSA World Congress and 20th NAFIPS International Conference (Cat. No. 01TH8569), 2002Fuzzy inference has a multi-granular architecture consisting of symbols and continuous values, and this architecture has worked well to incorporate experts' know-how into fuzzy controls. Stability analysis is one of the main topics of fuzzy control. A stability analysis based on the symbolic expression of a fuzzy control system is proposed. This method

A Symbolic Approach to Modeling Cellular Behavior
2002The author examines the connection between classical differential algebra of Ritt and Kolchin and differential algebraic models of biochemical systems-in particular, the models generated by S-system of Savageau. Several open problems of both biological and mathematical significance are proposed.

A Comparison of Symbols for Preferred Behaviors
Proceedings of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society Annual Meeting, 2002The number of persons traveling to and working in locations where their native language is not used has increased significantly. Thus, communication via symbols has become important for many reasons, including safety. Previous research has shown that a symbol indicating that something is to be done may significantly increase understanding of symbols ...

A mediation theory of symbolism as an aide to the experimental investigation of symbolic behavior
The Psychological Record, 1962The first part of this paper presents an extension of Osgood’s Mediation Theory to symbolic phenomena: It was hoped that use of learning theory principles would allow a redefinition of terms and the formulation of psychoanalytic hypotheses pertaining to symbolism in a form testable by experimentation.
