Sympathetic nerve activity: a link to stroke?

open access: yes, 1985
Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) have been shown to have an increased capacity for superior cervical sympathetic nerve activity which may protect against stroke (Mueller et al: Stroke 13: 115, 1982).

Potential of Nanoparticle‐Based Phototherapies for Future Treatment of Uveal Melanoma

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This review evaluates nanoparticle‐based phototherapies for uveal melanoma, highlighting emerging strategies to enhance tumor targeting, light delivery, and treatment precision. Preclinical data indicate improved efficacy and reduced toxicity, supporting their potential to enhance localized treatment and future translational advances. (Generated by the

Sympathetic nerve activity in takotsubo cardiomyopathy

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Psychotraumatology, 2012
The maintenance of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular health is based on a complex relationship between the heart and the brain. While some responses to stress are vital for survival, mental stress has also been claimed to cause cardiovascular disease ...

Muscle sympathetic nerve activity and hemodynamic alterations in middle-aged obese women

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research, 2001
To study the relationship between the sympathetic nerve activity and hemodynamic alterations in obesity, we simultaneously measured muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA), blood pressure, and forearm blood flow (FBF) in obese and lean individuals ...

Catheter-based renal sympathetic denervation significantly inhibits atrial fibrillation induced by electrical stimulation of the left stellate ganglion and rapid atrial pacing. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
BACKGROUND: Sympathetic activity involves the pathogenesis of atrial fibrillation (AF). Renal sympathetic denervation (RSD) decreases sympathetic renal afferent nerve activity, leading to decreased central sympathetic drive.

An investigation into the mechanisms by which bim gene expression is regulated in sympathetic neurons [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Neuronal apoptosis plays a critical role in development and disease. Developing sympathetic neurons require nerve growth factor (NGF) for their survival and die by apoptosis in its absence.

Estimated central blood volume in cirrhosis [PDF]

open access: yes, 1992
The estimated central blood volume (i.e., blood volume in the heart cavities, lungs and central arterial tree) was determined by multiplying cardiac output by circulatory mean transit time in 19 patients with cirrhosis and compared with sympathetic ...

The Adipose‐Sympathetic Nerve Crosstalk: FSTL1 as an Adipocyte‐Derived Neurotrophic Factor for WAT Browning

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
As a novel adipose‐derived neurotrophic factor, Follistatin‐like 1 is endocytosed by sympathetic neurons primarily via tropomyosin‐related kinase B. This process promotes sympathetic innervation in adipose tissue and norepinephrine release, leading to white adipose tissue browning, enhanced thermogenesis, and anti‐obesity effects in mice.

Depletion of noradrenaline inhibits electrically-evoked pain in the skin of the human forearm [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Guanethidine displaces noradrenaline from sympathetic varicosities, and blocks sympathetic noradrenergic neurotransmission by inhibiting the release of noradrenaline from depleted neural stores. The aim of this study was to determine whether depletion of

Transient Sleep Deprivation Induces Persistent Auditory Neuropathy via ROS‐Initiated Neuroinflammation and BK Channel Suppression

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Sleep disturbance severity closely tracks hearing loss in a clinical cohort, yet the mechanistic link remains unclear. Acute sleep deprivation is shown to trigger transient cochlear oxidative stress that switches into a self‐sustaining neuroinflammatory state, suppressing BK channels and causing irreversible synaptopathy.
