Impact of early dexmedetomidine administration on short‐ and long‐term outcomes in critically traumatic brain injury patients: A retrospective study using the MIMIC‐IV database

open access: yesIbrain, Volume 12, Issue 1, Page 137-150, Spring 2026.
Our retrospective analysis of the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care‐IV (MIMIC‐IV) database suggests that early use of dexmedetomidine is associated with lower short‐term (28‐day and in‐hospital) and long‐term (1‐year) mortality in patients with traumatic brain injury.

The effect of sex on the isolated and combined α‐ and β‐adrenergic control of blood flow during handgrip in adults at high altitude: An exploratory study

open access: yesPhysiological Reports, Volume 14, Issue 3, February 2026.
Abstract This study examined how sex influences blood flow during exercise at altitude and relative contributions of adrenergic mechanisms. Thirteen participants (8 M/5F) were tested at low and high altitude (days 3–11). Participants performed rhythmic handgrip for 3 min at 25% maximal voluntary contraction during local infusions of saline, propranolol

Therapeutic strategies for targeting excessive central sympathetic activation in human hypertension

open access: yes, 2010
The pathogenesis of hypertension and its mode of progression are complex, multifactoral and incompletely understood. However, there is accumulating evidence from humans and animal models of hypertension indicating that excessive central sympathetic nerve

Effects of Dexmedetomidine on the Behavioral Outcomes in Streptozotocin‐Induced Alzheimer's Disease Rats

open access: yesBrain and Behavior, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2026.
Dexmedetomidine at 25 µg/kg effectively reverses working and spatial memory deficits in a streptozotocin (STZ)‐induced rat model of Alzheimer's disease, restoring Y‐maze alternation and Morris Water Maze performance. Higher doses show no clear benefit, highlighting Dex‐25 as a promising neuroprotective candidate.

Single‐Shot Intrathecal Bupivacaine With Fentanyl vs. Dexmedetomidine for Labor Analgesia: A Randomized Controlled Trial

open access: yesAnesthesiology Research and Practice, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Background Labor pain is one of the most intense physiological pains experienced by women. Single‐shot spinal analgesia (SSSA) offers rapid and reliable labor pain relief. Combining bupivacaine with adjuvants like fentanyl or dexmedetomidine has been proposed to enhance analgesic efficacy and maternal comfort.

Hemodynamic Effects of Opioid‐Free Anesthesia Versus Opioid Anesthesia in Supratentorial Tumor Excision: A Randomized Controlled Trial

open access: yesAnesthesiology Research and Practice, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Background In view of analgesia and hemodynamic control in cranial surgeries, opioids have been used for decades. However, the use of opioids is not devoid of side effects. The current study was designed to evaluate opioid‐free anesthesia (OFA) as an alternative to opioid anesthesia (OA) in cranial surgeries for supratentorial tumors.

The Sympathetic Nervous System in Heart Failure Physiology, Pathophysiology, and Clinical Implications

open access: yes, 2009
Heart failure is a syndrome characterized initially by left ventricular dysfunction that triggers countermeasures aimed to restore cardiac output. These responses are compensatory at first but eventually become part of the disease process itself leading ...
