Pinwheels in symplectic rational and ruled surfaces and non‐squeezing of rational homology balls

open access: yesJournal of Topology, Volume 19, Issue 3, September 2026.
Abstract We use almost toric fibrations and the symplectic rational blow‐up to determine when certain Lagrangian pinwheels, which we call liminal, embed in symplectic rational and ruled surfaces. The case of L2,1$L_{2,1}$‐pinwheels, namely Lagrangian RP2s$\mathbb {R}P^2{\rm s}$, answers a question of Kronheimer in the negative, exhibiting a symplectic ...

Finite abelian group actions on weakly Lefschetz cohomologically symplectic manifolds

open access: yesJournal of Topology, Volume 19, Issue 3, September 2026.
Abstract We study continuous finite abelian group actions on weakly Lefschetz cohomologically symplectic (WLS) manifolds, a collection of topological manifolds that includes all compact connected Kaehler manifolds. We prove that for any WLS manifold X$X$, there exists a number C$C$ such that, for any integer m⩾C$m\geqslant C$, if (Z/m)k$({\mathbb {Z ...

Symplectic leaves of meromorphic Hitchin systems

open access: yes
The moduli space of meromorphic Higgs bundles admits a Poisson structure due to the independent work of Bottacin and Markman. In this paper, we revisit the symplectic leaves of this Poisson structure for the tame case. We study the partial compactification of the restricted Hitchin map on the symplectic leaves to an algebraically completely integrable ...

Simple groups and complements of smooth surfaces in simply connected 4‐manifolds

open access: yesJournal of Topology, Volume 19, Issue 3, September 2026.
Abstract For each integer n$n$ we construct an oriented closed simply connected 4‐manifold X$X$ admitting a smoothly embedded closed connected surface Σ$\Sigma$ of self‐intersection number n$n$ such that the complement of the surface has non‐trivial fundamental group. This answers a question of Kronheimer in Kirby's 1997 problem list.

A smooth codimension-one foliation of the five-sphere by symplectic leaves

open access: yes, 2009
We construct a smooth codimension-one foliation on the five-sphere in which every leaf is a symplectic four-manifold and such that the symplectic structure varies smoothly. Our construction implies the existence of a complete regular Poisson structure on the five-sphere.

Variational Integrators [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Variational integrators are a class of discretizations for mechanical systems which are derived by discretizing Hamilton's principle of stationary action.

Simple homotopy theory for Fukaya categories

open access: yesJournal of Topology, Volume 19, Issue 3, September 2026.
Abstract We develop a categorical framework for simple homotopy theory in Fukaya categories, based on the fundamental group of the ambient symplectic manifold. When the first Chern class vanishes, we show that any isomorphism in the Fukaya category of a Weinstein manifold has trivial Whitehead torsion.

Cteno‐Bot: An Untethered Metachronally Swimming Robot With Magnetoactive Propulsors

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, Volume 8, Issue 8, August 2026.
We present Cteno‐bot, an untethered ctenophore‐inspired robot which swims using metachronally coordinated appendages. A single mechanism controls up to 216 magnetoactive propulsors via a dynamically varying magnetic field. We show that the swimming speed of the robot can be increased without a corresponding increase in power requirement, simply by ...

Comparative Morphology and Homology of the Hyoid Apparatus and Associated Muscles in Beloniform Fishes (Teleostei: Atherinomorpha)

open access: yesJournal of Morphology, Volume 287, Issue 8, August 2026.
Homology of the branchiostegals rays in atherinomorph fishes demonstrated by the position of the rays relative to the interhyoideus muscle. In beloniform outgroups, above, the two groups of branchiostegal rays are separated by the interhyoideus. In beloniform fishes, below, only one group of branchiostegal rays is present.
