Studying the Endothelial Glycocalyx in vitro: What Is Missing?
All human cells are coated by a surface layer of proteoglycans, glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and plasma proteins, called the glycocalyx. The glycocalyx transmits shear stress to the cytoskeleton of endothelial cells, maintains a selective permeability ...

Towards definition of an ECM parts list: An advance on GO categories [PDF]
Those of us interested in the extracellular matrix (ECM) are faced with significant challenges of definition. ECM proteins are large, complex and assembled into crosslinked insoluble matrices.

Isolation Defines Identity: Functional Consequences of Extracellular Vesicle Purification Strategies
Four extracellular vesicle purification strategies are compared using ovarian‐cancer ascites and ES‐2 cell supernatants. A novel workflow links purification to function by combining particle‐normalized proteomics with matched cell‐free and cell‐based assays.

Syndecan-4 negatively regulates antiviral signalling by mediating RIG-I deubiquitination via CYLD
Syndecans are transmembrane proteoglycans implicated in diverse cellular activities. Here the authors show that Syndecan-4 via its cytosolic domain negatively regulates antiviral immunity by enhancing RIG-I interaction with a deubiquitinating enzyme CYLD,

CD168 Identifies Proliferating Pancreatic Islet Cells in Murine and Human
This study identifies CD168 as a conserved surface marker for proliferating β‐cells in mouse, human islets, and pancreatic islet tumors. CD168⁺ cells show high proliferation and low insulin expression. CD168+ cells form mostly uni‐β lineage clones, and some of the clones are multi‐lineage.

Glycosaminoglycans and Proteoglycans
In this editorial to MDPI Pharmaceuticals special issue “Glycosaminoglycans and Proteoglycans” we describe in outline the common structural features of glycosaminoglycans and the characteristics of proteoglycans, including the intracellular proteoglycan,

Identification of Heparan Sulfate in Dilated Cardiomyopathy by Integrated Bioinformatics Analysis
ObjectivesHeparan sulfate (HS) forms heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs), such as syndecans (SDCs) and glypicans (GPCs), to perform biological processes in the mammals.

This study harnesses hydrodynamic flows to generate, confine and stimulate stem cell spheroids, enabling the large‐scale production of extracellular vesicles (EVs). This innovative method not only streamlines spheroid formation and subsequent EV release in a single, integrated process, but also ensures the generation of EVs with enhanced biological ...

Syndecan-3 in Inflammation and Angiogenesis
Syndecans are a four member multifunctional family of cell surface molecules with diverse biological roles. Syndecan-3 (SDC3) is the largest of these, but in comparison to the other family members relatively little is known about this molecule. SDC3 null
