Measuring the morpho-syntactic ambiguity using the edit distance functions

2021 IEEE 19th World Symposium on Applied Machine Intelligence and Informatics (SAMI), 2021
This paper presents the application of edit distance functions for the measuring of morphological ambiguity and similarity between the natural languages. We propose sequence and tree edit distance functions for the Universal dependencies framework, which compare both morphological and syntactical annotations of the words in the sentences.

Improving Neural Machine Translation with Neural Syntactic Distance

Proceedings of the 2019 Conference of the North, 2019
The explicit use of syntactic information has been proved useful for neural machine translation (NMT). However, previous methods resort to either tree-structured neural networks or long linearized sequences, both of which are inefficient. Neural syntactic distance (NSD) enables us to represent a constituent tree using a sequence whose length is ...

Addressing distance in the space syntax syntactical model

Urban Design International, 2001
This paper discusses pedestrian movement and the criteria pedestrians use when selecting a route. The source of the material was an investigation into the pedestrian environment in the city centre of Cairo. Resulting from this investigation the paper seeks to provide a model for pedestrian movement using the attributes suggested by Space Syntax and ...

Label-Free Data Mining of Scientific Literature by Unsupervised Syntactic Distance Analysis

The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters, 2023
Label-free data mining can efficiently feed large amounts of data from the vast scientific literature into artificial intelligence (AI) processing systems. Here, we demonstrate an unsupervised syntactic distance analysis (SDA) approach that is capable of mining chemical substances, functions, properties, and operations without annotation.

The development of syntactic complexity of Chinese JFL learners based on Mean Dependency Distance and Mean Hierarchical Distance

International Review of Applied Linguistics in Language Teaching, 2023
Abstract Mean dependency distance (MDD) and mean hierarchical distance (MHD) are two linguistic measures used in dependency syntax studies to investigate the syntactic features of compositions written by English as a foreign language (EFL) learners. However, their applicability and validity in differentiating proficiency levels and genre

An Investigation of Fitness Sharing with Semantic and Syntactic Distance Metrics

2012
This paper investigates the efficiency of using semantic and syntactic distance metrics in fitness sharing with Genetic Programming (GP). We modify the implementation of fitness sharing to speed up its execution, and used two distance metrics in calculating the distance between individuals in fitness sharing: semantic distance and syntactic distance ...

Syntactic And Nonsyntactic Constraints On Long-Distance Reflexives

2000
The goal of this chapter is to untangle the various factors involved in the interpretation of reflexive pronouns, especially in Chinese and English. Building on proposals developed in Pollard and Xue, the chapter discusses not only syntactic conditions but also nonsyntactic conditions that determine the interpretation of the Chinese reflexive ziji ...
