Perspectives on Regulating Systemic Risk [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
This book chapter, which synthesizes several of the author’s articles, attempts to provide useful perspectives on regulating systemic risk. First, it argues that systemic shocks are inevitable.

Enabling Systems and the Adaptability of Complex Systems-of- Systems

open access: yesProcedia Computer Science, 2012
AbstractFor complex techno-social system-of-systems, the system's robustness and its ability to adapt to changing environments and circumstances over the life cycle of the systems is an important measure of system quality and effectiveness. The IEEE 15288-2004 standard describes the concept of “enabling systems” that provide non-operational services to ...

Association of high‐dose radioactive iodine therapy with PPM1D‐mutated clonal hematopoiesis in older individuals

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In thyroid cancer patients, high‐dose (≥7.4 GBq) radioactive iodine therapy (RAIT) was associated with a higher prevalence of clonal hematopoiesis (variant allele frequency >2%) in individuals aged ≥50 years (OR = 2.44). In silico analyses showed that truncating PPM1D mutations conferred a selective advantage under these conditions.

Knowing differently in systemic intervention [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
© 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. This paper makes the case for extended ways of knowing in systemic intervention. It argues that the deployment of formal (even reflective) thinking and dialogue methods are inadequate, on their own, to the critical tasks ...

Thue systems as rewriting systems

open access: yesJournal of Symbolic Computation, 1985
The paper is a survey of recent results on Thue systems that have been obtained in the last ten years. The emphasis is on Thue systems with the Church-Rosser property and the main effort is expended in outlining the properties of such systems and the monoids they present.

System of systems reliability for multi-state systems [PDF]

open access: yes2009 Annual Reliability and Maintainability Symposium, 2009
The proliferation of networking technologies in commercial, consumer, and industrial applications has been mirrored in the defense industry. The US Department of Defense, along with comparable organizations abroad, have adopted a network centric paradigm for emerging and future systems.

Small modifier, big decision: switching to SUMO mode adds weight to cancer stemness in mammary tumors

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Inhibition of protein SUMOylation has been shown to block tumorigenesis; however, the specific mechanisms by which SUMOylation controls the tumor‐initiating capacities remain elusive. Li et al. describe the role of Etv1 SUMOylation in cancer stem cells using mouse models of mammary gland tumorigenesis.

Default risk in an interconnected banking system with endogeneous asset markets : [Version: August 2011] [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
This paper analyzes the emergence of systemic risk in a network model of interconnected bank balance sheets. Given a shock to asset values of one or several banks, systemic risk in the form of multiple bank defaults depends on the strength of balance ...

Systemic Risk and Stability in Financial Networks

open access: yes, 2013
This paper argues that the extent of financial contagion exhibits a form of phase transition: as long as the magnitude of negative shocks affecting financial institutions are sufficiently small, a more densely connected financial network (corresponding ...
