Carbothermal synthesis of TaC whiskers via a vapor-liquid-solid growth mechanism
Journal of Materials Research, 1997Tantalum carbide whiskers have been synthesized via a vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) growth mechanism in the temperature region 1200–1300 °C in nitrogen or argon. The starting materials consisted of Ta2O5, C, Ni, and NaCl. Carbon was added to reduce tantalum pentoxide, via a carbothermal reduction process, and Ni was used to catalyze the whisker growth ...

Physical and Mechanical Properties of Hot-Pressed Materials of the ZrB2–TaC–SiC System
Refractories and Industrial Ceramics, 2019High-density (with a relative density of up to 98.8%) ultra-high-temperature ceramic materials (UHTCs) based on the ZrB2–TaC–SiC system were obtained by hot pressing for 15 min at 2000°C 30 MPa of pressure in an argon atmosphere. Phase composition, lattice parameters, microstructure, flexural strength, Vickers hardness and crack resistance were studied.

Quantum tic-tac-toe: A teaching metaphor for superposition in quantum mechanics
American Journal of Physics, 2006Quantum tic-tac-toe was developed as a metaphor for the counterintuitive nature of superposition exhibited by quantum systems. It offers a way of introducing quantum physics without advanced mathematics, provides a conceptual foundation for understanding the meaning of quantum mechanics, and is fun to play.

Abstract TaC ceramics with 0.03–0.60 wt% of boron additions were prepared by hot pressing at 2100 °C for 1 h under a pressure of 40 MPa. Effects of boron content on densification, phase composition, microstructure, mechanical properties and oxidation resistance of the TaC ceramics were investigated. When the boron content was 0.12 wt% and above, full

Structure Prediction and Mechanical Properties of Tantalum Carbide (TaC) on ab initio Level
Zeitschrift für anorganische und allgemeine ChemieAbstractTantalum carbide (TaC) is an extremely hard, brittle, refractory ceramic material with excellent physical properties, which makes it a desirable material in e. g. aerospace industries. In order to explore the range of feasible modifications of TaC, we have executed a crystal structure prediction study of the TaC chemical system using a multi ...

Mechanical properties were related to composition and condition for chromium alloys strengthened with TaC, TaB, and TaC + TaB. A 0.25 to 1.00 mole percent alloying range was investigated. Thermomechanical condition had a similar influence on high temperature strength of the three alloy types.
