Optimizing photoactivation of PA‐mCherry for optical pooled CRISPR screens

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Photoactivatable PA‐mCherry finds widespread use to optically tag individual cells. However, confocal 405 nm UV laser‐scanning (normal scan) is much less efficient than widefield UV illumination, limiting the use of PA‐mCherry on confocal instruments. We remedy this limitation by reporting that rapid and repeated confocal scanning with a low‐intensity,

Dewatered tailings disposal : a cost effective alternative to wet disposal

open access: yes, 2015
A coal mine in Mozambique, southern Africa, produces both metallurgical and thermal coal. A relatively high volume of coal washery wastes are produced due to a low average yield.

Early‐life high‐fat diet exposure increases Achilles tendon stiffness and induces transcriptomic alterations

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Early‐life exposure to a high‐fat diet altered intact Achilles tendons in rat offspring, making them thinner, stiffer, and molecularly distinct even without injury. These findings suggest that developmental high‐fat diet exposure may impair tendon quality and increase susceptibility to mechanical overload or tendon injury later in life.

Study on the Microstructure and Permeability Characteristics of Tailings Based on CT Scanning Technology

open access: yesApplied Sciences
The permeability characteristics of tailings directly affect the position of the infiltration line of the tailings dam, which is the most critical factor affecting tailings dam failures.

Tailings dams in Nevada : an overview

open access: yes, 2015
If the State of Nevada were a country, it would rank as the eighth largest gold producer in the world (NMA, 2014). The state is also a significant producer of silver, copper, barite, lithium, and other minerals.

Time‐restricted feeding prior to Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection reduces tissue CD4+ T cells with limited impact on bacterial clearance

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Time‐restricted feeding (TRF) in mice increased liver fatty acid oxidation and decreased fatty acid biosynthesis. These alterations persisted when TRF was discontinued and the host was infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Pre‐exposure to TRF did not alter tissue (lung and spleen) mycobacterial burden but significantly reduced CD3+ T cells in lungs

Molecular characterization of covRS mutations in M1UK Streptococcus pyogenes

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Group A Streptococcus (GAS) acquires covRS mutations driving a hypervirulent bacterial state, frequently associated with invasive disease‐like necrotizing fasciitis. We demonstrate that the newly emerged M1UK GAS lineage can also acquire these mutations.

Tubifex : A biological method for dewatering oil sands tailings

open access: yes, 2015
In Northern Alberta’s oil sands region, there are more than 800 million m³ tailings occupying more than 180 km² of tailings ponds. The suspended solids (mostly silts and clays), gradually densify to 25 to 40 wt% solids in 2-5 years.
