Linking anatomical diversity with functional life strategies in a liana community of central Africa

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 248, Issue 3, Page 1225-1244, November 2025.
Summary Studying lianas involves unique challenges due to their high functional diversity. Despite their prominence in tropical forests, gaps in the understanding of anatomical organisation affect interpretations of their co‐existing functional strategies.

Evolutionary and functional relationships between plant and microbial C1 metabolism in terrestrial ecosystems

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 248, Issue 3, Page 1132-1153, November 2025.
Summary One‐carbon (C1) metabolism, centered on the universal methyl donor S‐adenosyl methionine (SAM), plays critical roles in biosynthesis, redox regulation, and stress responses across plants and microbes. A recently proposed photosynthetic C1 pathway links SAM methyl groups directly to RuBisCO‐mediated CO2 assimilation and integrates with nitrogen ...

Credit and inflation under borrower’s lack of commitment [PDF]

open access: yes
Here we investigate the existence of credit in a cash-in-advance economy where there are complete markets but for the fact that agents cannot commit to repay their debts.

An updated history of TDIF‐PXY signalling: a study in cell fate and tissue patterning

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 248, Issue 3, Page 1154-1165, November 2025.
Summary Non‐cell autonomous signalling is a mechanism by which stem cells are maintained across the tree of life. In plants, many stem cell populations are regulated by peptide ligands related to CLAVATA3, which are secreted from one cell type and bind to the leucine‐rich repeat domain of a plasma‐membrane‐localised receptor kinase related to CLAVATA1 ...

Ground terminal expert (GTEX). Part 2: Expert system diagnostics for a 30/20 Gigahertz satellite transponder [PDF]

open access: yes
A research effort was undertaken to investigate how expert system technology could be applied to a satellite communications system. The focus of the expert system is the satellite earth station. A proof of concept expert system called the Ground Terminal

Decay stages of Jurassic wood debris from Scotland: evidence for the coevolution of fungal rot, arthropods and the nurse log strategy

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 248, Issue 3, Page 1557-1571, November 2025.
Summary A key feature of extant conifer forests is the high percentage of seeds that germinate and establish on dead wood; in some forests, this can exceed 90%. This deadwood can act as an ideal nursery for young tree species, leading to this type of seedbed being termed ‘nurse logs’.
