Selected Lark Mitochondrial Genomes Provide Insights into the Evolution of Second Control Region with Tandem Repeats in Alaudidae (Aves, Passeriformes)

open access: yesLife
The control region (CR) regulates the replication and transcription of the mitochondrial genome (mitogenome). Some avian mitogenomes possess two CRs, and the second control region (CR2) may enhance replication and transcription; however, the CR2 in lark ...

Longer internal exons tend to have more tandem repeats and more frequently experience insertions and deletions

open access: yesLife Science Alliance
We found that insertions and deletions occur more frequently in longer internal exons and mostly encode structure-less regions, and that half of them are attributable to alterations in tandem repeats.

Genome-wide selection inference at short tandem repeats.

open access: yesPLoS Genetics
Short tandem repeats (STRs) comprising repeated sequences of 1-6 bp are one of the largest sources of genetic variation in humans. STRs are known to contribute to a variety of disorders, including Mendelian diseases, complex traits, and cancer.

Leaftronics: Bio‐Fractal Scaffolds From Leaf Venation for Low‐Waste Electronics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
“Leaftronics” transforms naturally evolved leaf venation into quasi‐fractal scaffolds for sustainable electronics. Polymer‐infiltrated leaf skeletons can be used to fabricate ultra‐smooth, reflow‐ and thin‐film‐compatible decomposable substrates, while making the same lignocellulose networks conducting results in flexible transparent electrodes.
