Taste Buds: Development and Evolution
Brain, Behavior and Evolution, 2004The gustatory system in vertebrates comprises peripheral receptors (taste buds), innervated by three cranial nerves (VII, IX, and X), and a series of central neural centers and pathways. All vertebrates, with the exception of hagfishes, have taste buds.

Intragemmal spaces in taste buds
Zeitschrift fr Zellforschung und Mikroskopische Anatomie, 1965Empty spaces are seen under both light and electron microscopes inside the taste buds of the dog lingual circumvallate papillae. They average 10 μ in diameter and 20 μ in length. Lacking endothelial lining, they are bordered directly by cell membranes of neighboring bud cells, and thus represent enlarged intercellular spaces.

Synaptic Transmission at Taste Buds
Nature, 1964PREVIOUS investigations have shown that a variety of sensory receptors can be stimulated by the application of acetylcholine1, this sensitivity being enhanced in mechanoreceptors by the addition of 10−5 g/ml. physostigmine. Excitation by acetylcholine was blocked by tubocurarine or hexamethonium (10−7–10−5 g/ml.)2, but the response of the receptor to ...

Microtubules and filaments in the taste bud
Zeitschrift fr Zellforschung und mikroskopische Anatomie, 1971Electron microscopic investigation in the taste bud of the foliate papillae of the rabbit has distinguished two filamentous structures: microtubules and filaments.

Taste buds and adrenergic fibres
Journal of the Neurological Sciences, 1969Abstract By a specific histochemical method for the detection of catecholamines, a large number of adrenergic fibres was observed in the rabbit foliate and circumvallate papillae. Adrenergic fibres run in the corion, in close relationship with the basal pole of taste buds.
