Effects of Lateral Hydrological Connectivity on Aquatic Invertebrate Assemblages in Floodplains, Oxbow Lakes and the Main River Channel of the Savannah River, Southeastern USA

open access: yesFreshwater Biology, Volume 71, Issue 2, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Within river corridors, hydrological connectivity drives the local abiotic and biotic processes, shapes ecosystem functioning and promotes biodiversity. However, hydrological cycling is changing due to climate change, and drought is intensifying and becoming more frequent in many regions of the world, making it critical to understand the ...

Environmental Drivers of Xylogenesis in Taxodium Distichum (Bald Cypress) in the Southeastern United States

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences, Volume 131, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract Bald cypress (Taxodium distichum (L.) Rich.), a foundation species in the bottomland hardwood forests of the southeastern United States, is essential for maintaining ecosystem functions. This study assesses the impacts of environmental changes on bald cypress ring widths and xylogenesis by correlating growth patterns with climatic variables ...

Effects of temperature and precipitation on wild turkey brood survival in the southeastern United States

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, Volume 49, Issue S1, December 2025.
We evaluated how variation in weather and plant phenology affected wild turkey brood survival by monitoring 257 broods across the southeastern United States during 2014–2022. Average daily low temperature, average daily precipitation, maximum single‐day precipitation, and proximity to green‐up date did not predict daily brood survival.

Suitability of Taxodium distichum for Afforesting the Littoral Zone of the Three Gorges Reservoir

open access: yesPLOS ONE, 2016
The littoral zone ecosystem of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) has become significantly degraded by annual cycles of prolonged winter flooding and summer drought. For purposes of flood control and sediment management, the water level in the reservoir is lowered by 30 m during the summer monsoon season and raised again to 175 m above sea level each ...

Fine-scale canopy architecture and rainfall partitioning in karst vegetation: Evidence for a capture-and-funnel redistribution pattern from terrestrial laser scanning

open access: yesJournal of Hydrology: Regional Studies
Study Region: The Karst Critical Zone in Southwest China is characterized by limited surface-water retention and high susceptibility to soil erosion, both increasingly intensified by frequent high-intensity rainfall events.

Response of underwater photosynthesis to light, CO2, temperature, and submergence time of Taxodium distichum, a flood-tolerant tree

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science
IntroductionPartial or complete submergence of trees can occur in natural wetlands during times of high waters, but the submergence events have increased in severity and frequency over the past decades.
