Spectral Tuning of Hyperbolic Shear Polaritons in Monoclinic Gallium Oxide via Isotopic Substitution

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Spectral tuning of highly directional hyperbolic shear polaritons is realized via isotopic substitution of 16O to 18O in monoclinic β$\beta$‐phase gallium oxide. A red‐shift of almost 40 cm−1 is experimentally demonstrated with near‐field imaging, corroborated by the permittivity change extracted from far‐field experiments and density functional theory.

Teaching Mathematics with Mathematical Software

open access: yesJournal of Humanistic Mathematics, 2015
The history of contemporary mathematical education is the history of a struggle against computers and IT. As a result specially selected simplified math problems are used while teaching. Just as it was a hundred years ago, contemporary students are forced to memorize a lot of rules and theorems in order to solve math problems.

Peptide‐Induced Ferroelectricity in Charge‐Transfer Supramolecular Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Bio‐inspired supramolecular charge‐transfer amphiphiles self‐assemble into nanoribbons in water, where peptide chirality‐induced symmetry breaking generates robust ferroelectricity across multiple systems. These water‐processable organic ferroelectrics also enhance neuronal outgrowth and electrophysiological maturity, offering a versatile strategy for ...

Tools or crutches? Apparatus as a sense-making aid in mathematics teaching with children with moderate learning difficulties [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
This paper challenges a view of concrete materials as abstracts used within a rigid instructional sequence that particular children are perceived to require or not, as the case may be. Focussing on mathematics teaching, it contends that it is more useful
