Direct Evidence of Magnetic Reconnection Onset via the Tearing Instability
Magnetic reconnection is a sporadic process responsible for energy release in space and laboratory plasmas. It is believed that the tearing mode instability may be responsible for the onset of reconnection in the magnetotail.

Numerical studies on electron magnetohydrodynamics tearing mode instability
The 2D electron-magnetohydrodynamics (EMHD) dominant tearing mode in an electron-skin-depth-scale current sheet (ECS) is further studied. The resistive diffusion is proved to be insignificant at the scale.

Tubular Pinch and Tearing Instability [PDF]
Theoretical considerations and previous experimental findings with fast tubular (cylindrical sheet) pinch discharges are reviewed briefly. More recent work with magnetic probes, as well as streak and Kerr cell photography, corroborates that the sheet-current configuration can be sufficiently stable to survive a fair number of pinch oscillations.

Analysis of a multi-scenario database of over 13 000 DIII-D H-mode discharges shows that the $m,n = 2,1$ magnetic islands are dominantly pressure gradient driven, stochastically triggered non-linear instabilities at all edge safety factor ( $q_\text{95}$

Tearing Instability and Current-Sheet Disruption in the Turbulent Dynamo
Turbulence in a conducting plasma can amplify seed magnetic fields in what is known as the turbulent, or small-scale, dynamo. The associated growth rate and emergent magnetic-field geometry depend sensitively on the material properties of the plasma, in ...

In this study, we observed magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) activity of the spherical tokamak Globus-M2 which led to a deterioration in plasma confinement, such as a transition from the H-mode to L-mode, or even disruption.

Resistive instabilities in toroidal anisotropic plasmas
Resistive singular layer equations are developed by applying the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model to toroidal anisotropic plasmas. This work extends the previous ideal MHD theory [Shi et al. Phys. Plasmas 23, 082121 (2016)] to the resistive case.

Two types of unstable eigenmodes of resistive tearing instabilities, namely, symmetric and anti-symmetric modes, in a double current sheet configuration are analyzed by means of both an eigenvalue solver and initial value simulation.

Gyrokinetic simulations of the tearing instability [PDF]
Linear gyrokinetic simulations covering the collisional–collisionless transitional regime of the tearing instability are performed. It is shown that the growth rate scaling with collisionality agrees well with that predicted by a two-fluid theory for a low plasma beta case in which ion kinetic dynamics are negligible.
