Stratified Resistive Tearing Instability [PDF]
Resistive tearing instabilities are common in fluids that are highly electrically conductive and carry strong currents. We determine the effect of stable stratification on the tearing instability under the Boussinesq approximation. Our results generalise previous work that considered only specific parameter regimes, and we show that the length scale of

The Tearing Instability of Resistive Magnetohydrodynamics [PDF]
In this chapter we explore the linear onset of one of the most important instabilities of resistive magnetohydrodynamics, the tearing instability. In particular, we focus on two important aspects of the onset of tearing: asymptotic (modal) stability and transient (non-modal) stability.

Inertial Effects on Tearing Instability [PDF]
In this work, we explore inertial effects, due to charged species in a resistive plasma, on the tearing instability. The standard theory of tearing modes assumes a long wavelength limit. At shorter wave lengths, inertial effects can become important and the current density flowing in the fluid can acquire a finite relaxation time.

Tearing Instability in Alfvén and Kinetic‐Alfvén Turbulence [PDF]
AbstractRecently, it has been realized that magnetic plasma turbulence and magnetic field reconnection are inherently related phenomena. Turbulent fluctuations generate regions of sheared magnetic field that become unstable to the tearing instability and reconnection, thus modifying turbulence at the corresponding scales.

Disk Tearing: Numerical Investigation of Warped Disk Instability [PDF]
We present numerical simulations of misaligned disks around a spinning black hole covering a range of parameters. Previous simulations have shown that disks that are strongly warped by a forced precession - in this case, the Lense-Thirring effect from ...

Linear theory of visco-resistive tearing instability [PDF]
A new linear theory of a tearing instability is shown, where the modified LSC (Loureiro, Schekochihin, and Cowley) theory [T. Shimizu, arXiv:2209.00149 (2022)] is extended to visco-resistive MHD. In contrast to the original LSC theories [Loureiro et al., Phys.

Current sheets in the solar corona : formation, fragmentation and heating [PDF]
In this thesis we investigate current sheets in the solar corona. The well known 1D model for the tearing mode instability is presented, before progressing to 2D where we introduce a non-uniform resistivity.

Application of Leak-Before-Break concept in 316LN austenitic steel pipes welded using 316L [PDF]
The paper presents a study of the application of Leak-BeforeBreak (LBB) concept in a relatively small-diameter high energy reactor coolant line, where it is proposed type AISI 316LN to be used as base material welded with type AISI 316L coated electrode ...
