Kinetic theory of tearing instabilities

The Physics of Fluids, 1977
The transition of the tearing instability from the collisional to the collisionless regime is investigated kinetically using a Fokker–Planck collision operator to represent electron-ion collisions. As a function of the collisionality of the plasma, the tearing instability falls into three regions, which are referred to as collisionless, semi ...

Subscapularis Tears and Instability

2017
The subscapularis is critical to the normal function and kinematics of the shoulder. With the wide adoption of arthroscopic techniques to address shoulder pathology, subscapularis tears have been increasingly recognized and treated. Clinical exam and advanced imaging are useful for the diagnosis of subscapularis tears, but smaller tears may not be ...

Tearing instability in the pulsar magnetosphere

Astrophysics and Space Science, 1987
Equations governing the coupling of the scalar and vector potentials for a resistive electron-positron plasma in a strong magnetic field are derived. It is shown that in the presence of magnetic shear, a tearing instability may occur. The latter can lead to magnetic field line reconnection and the formation of magnetic islands which could affect the ...

Collisionless tearing instability in magnetotail plasmas

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 1990
The problem of the linear stability of collisionless tearing modes in the Earth's magnetotail is revisited. It is found that the collisionless tearing mode is linearly unstable with wavelengths of the order of 10 RE. It is shown that an important feature neglected in earlier theories is a nonzero equilibrium By‐field.

Are the tearing and the Weibel instabilities the same?

The tearing instability, which takes free energy from oppositely directed magnetic fields, and the Weibel instability, which takes free energy from temperature anisotropies, at first glance, appear to be entirely different instabilities. However, the opposing magnetic fields enforce a current between them, and the associated drift of the plasma leads ...

Energy variations at the onset of the tearing instability

Journal of Plasma Physics, 1986
The resistive instability of a simple one-dimensional current sheet model has been investigated both in the long and in the short wavelength approximation. For the linear phase of the instability it is possible to derive, by means of an expansion technique, an analytical expression for the growth rate and for the perturbation itself.

Hall dynamics and resistive tearing instability

Journal of Plasma Physics, 2004
The stability of the neutral current sheet is analyzed in the frame of Hall dynamics. The problem is treated analytically and results are verified by numerical processing. A new version of tearing instability is found and described. It scales more favorably with the Lundquist number and has smaller wavelengths.
