Resoundings of the flesh: Caring for others by way of “second person” perspectivity

open access: yesInternational Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health & Well-Being, 2012
In bringing ourselves to the encounter with the experience of others, we bring our bodies with us—and, in doing so, we are able to resonate not only intellectually but also empathically with the other's experiences and expressions (which ...

Circulating histones as clinical biomarkers in critically ill conditions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Circulating histones are emerging as promising biomarkers in critical illness due to their diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic potential. Detection methods such as ELISA and mass spectrometry provide reliable approaches for quantifying histone levels in plasma samples.

Correlation between Tear Osmolarity and Tear Meniscus [PDF]

open access: yesOptometry and Vision Science, 2014
To examine the relationship between tear meniscus height (TMH) and subjective meniscus grading (subjective tear meniscus [TM]) with tear osmolarity.Tear osmolarity measurements (using TearLab) and digital images of the TM were obtained in 177 consecutive patients undergoing an eye examination at our optometry clinic (Universidad de Santiago de ...

The epithelial barrier theory proposes a comprehensive explanation for the origins of allergic and other chronic noncommunicable diseases

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Exposure to common noxious agents (1), including allergens, pollutants, and micro‐nanoplastics, can cause epithelial barrier damage (2) in our body's protective linings. This may trigger an immune response to our microbiome (3). The epithelial barrier theory explains how this process can lead to chronic noncommunicable diseases (4) affecting organs ...

C9orf72 ALS‐causing mutations lead to mislocalization and aggregation of nucleoporin Nup107 into stress granules

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mutations in the C9orf72 gene represent the most common genetic cause of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a fatal neurodegenerative disease. Using patient‐derived neurons and C. elegans models, we find that the nucleoporin Nup107 is dysregulated in C9orf72‐associated ALS. Conversely, reducing Nup107 levels mitigates disease‐related changes.

Tears for the Fallen [PDF]

open access: yesThe Permanente Journal, 2016
“Trauma 99 activation, ETA 5 min!” As an emergency medicine resident, this type of overhead page is what gets my adrenaline pumping. Finally, I thought, I’ve been waiting for some action all night. I looked over at the call sheet: 30-year-old male, single gunshot wound to the torso, CPR in progress.
